Title
Culture
and
development
in the
Tibetan
Autonomous
Region

Master's Thesis
Notes
The
purpose
of this
thesis
is
to
examine
the
relationship
between
the
culture
of the
native
population
of the
Tibetan
Autonomous
Region
and the
level
of
economic
development
of those
people
. This
relationship
is
examined
both
in
terms
of the
impact
of
Tibetan
culture
on
economic
development
and the
likely
future
of
Tibetan
culture
in the
modem
world
. This
analysis
involves
examining
the
nature
of
Tibetan
culture
and the
state
of the
economy
in the
past
,
present
and
future
.
It
also
examines
the
relationship
between
the
Tibetans
and the
Chinese
Government
and the
political
and
cultural
impact
of the
Tibetan
exiles
. This
thesis
shows
that the
low
level
of
economic
development
is
due
to a
combination
of the
geography
and
ecology
of the
region
, the
effects
of
recent
historical
events
, and
finally
those
parts
of the
Tibetan
culture
having
to
do
with the
class
structure
. In
addition
there
is
an
ongoing
impact
from the
proportion
of
natural
and
human
resources
that
is
diverted
from
productive
use
into
religious
use
. This
diversion
has had a
benefit
in
preserving
the
social
order
but has been a
distraction
of
resources
fromTibet's
development
needs
.
Finally
this
thesis
speculates
on the
future
of
Tibetan
culture
and
suggests
that
while
Tibetan
culture
will
survive
it
will not be the
dominant
culture
in the
TAR
but
instead
will be an
historic
curiosity
,
preserved
as a
living
museum
piece
.
