Notes	The present study examined whether relationships between personality characteristics and emotional reactions to mass media exist. Specifically, the purpose of this study was to find out if anxiety sensitivity, neuroticism and depression, may make individuals more susceptible to experiencing negative emotional reactions to the mass media. It is important to investigate the possibility that personality characteristics may mediate responses to emotional material in television and film because there is a need to determine who is at risk for developing persistent symptoms such as fear, anxiety, or depression after viewing has ceased. Students were recruited from Central Connecticut State University undergraduate psychology classes, for a total sample size of 195. I utilized four instruments with questions that focused on personality characteristics, media experiences and demographics. Specifically, the Resiss-Epstein-Gursky (1993) Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI) measures the fear of anxiety; The NEO PI-R Personality Inventory (Costa & McCrae, 1992) was utilized to measure neuroticism personality traits; The Multiscore Depression Inventory was devised by Berndt (1986) to examine typical feelings and attitudes assessing depression; and a media questionnaire was administered to measure emotional reactions to the media. It was expected that the three personality traits would be related to more frequent reports of emotional disturbances, severity of the reactions, and the duration of the negative emotions to media material. It was further hypothesized that any of these three personality variables would decrease an individual's fondness of material similar to that viewed previously which had caused a negative reaction. Finally, it was expected that females would report more unpleasant reactions than males. Results indicated: 1) significant relationships between the three personality characteristics and the reports of negative reactions; 2) a significant predictive relationship between neuroticism and the number of negative reactions; 3 ) significant relationships between anxiety sensitivity and neuroticism with severity of negative reactions and durations of reactions; and 4) women reported more unpleasant fear reactions than men. Over all, negative emotional reactions to the media were positively predicted by neuroticism. This suggests that the individuals experiencing frequent fear reactions to the media may share a common trait. That is, they may be more susceptible to emotional material in the media and experience more distress while viewing.
