Title
The
happy
teenager
:
fact
or
fiction
-
a
historical
thesis
of
happiness
,
adolescents
, and
methods
to
promote
happiness
in
adolescents
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2001
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
This
thesis
explores
the
concept
of
human
happiness
,
focusing
primarily
on
adolescents
and their
experience
of this
distinct
state
of
being
. An
historical
approach
is
taken
,
reviewing
how
happiness
has been
defined
and
treated
throughout
the
years
by
mental
health
professionals
in their
study
and
practice
of
psychology
.
Biological
correlates
,
such
as the
recent
discovery
of
genetic
links
to
happiness
, are
studied
, as are
personality
types
. And
even
though
no
one's
age
,
gender
, or
ethnic
origin
can
predict
whether
an
individual
will be
happy
or not, these
demographics
do
influence
happiness
and are,
thus
,
addressed
in this
study
.
All
humans
are
born
with a
psychological
need
to
connect
to
other
humans
. This
need
for
connectedness
plays
an
especially
significant
role
in the
lives
of
adolescents
. This
thesis
delves
into how their
relationships
with
self
,
family
,
friends
,
school
personnel
and
others
in the
community
,
influence
teens
'
happiness
,
well-being
and
satisfaction
with
life
. The
concept
and
practice
of
positive
psychology
,
although
recent
,
is
becoming
more
widespread
in the
psychological
community
. With
it
,
new
studies
are
being
conducted
specifically
centered
on
human
happiness
.
Some
are
even
being
targeted
at
adolescents
alone
.
Strides
are
being
taken
in
developing
theories
and
interventions
focused
on
promoting
human
happiness
. This
thesis
provides
an
overview
of
some
of this
work
in
progress
and its
findings
.
Finally
,
after
a
thorough
literature
review
, this
thesis
offers
recommendations
for
interventions
to
promote
happiness
in
adolescents
based
on the
findings
of the
reviewed
studies
.
