political

Notes
This
thesis
argues
that the
reunification
of
Germany
was
well
overdue
because
the
German
nation
arrived
at a
point
in its
development
where
certain
truths
about
its
past
no
longer
applied
. The "
truth
"
about
Germany
and its
past
cannot
be
considered
valid
in the
context
of its
present
state
of
affairs
because
Germany
is
matured
to a
level
of
modernity
in the
responsible
use
of its
sovereignty
,
where
former
misdeeds
in
past
wars
and
conflicts
are
irrelevant
as they
relate
to how
mature
,
modem
nation
states
behave
today
. These "
truths
"
concern
questions
of
German
aggression
, a
single
German
identity
, the
ability
of
economic
success
to
suppress
German
nationalism
, the
apparent
non-existence
of
German
policy
towards
immigration
, and
globalization
as a
catalyst
for
reunification
and for
integration
in
Europe
. The
thesis
examines
these
outmoded
"
truths
" by
analysis
of
Germany's
history
The
first
unification
of
Germany
occurred
through
the
charisma
and
dominant
character
of
Otto
Von
Bismarck
, and was a
unification
born
out
of
war
.
It
was a
unification
born
of
war
that
defined
German
aggression
in this
period
, as
well
as in
subsequent
periods
of
nationalist
aggression
in the
First
and
Second
World
War
. The
unfortunate
aftermath
of these
wars
was
seen
in the
development
of a
distinct
,
single
German
identity
that
encouraged
nationalist
and
aggressive
tendencies
, and
sustained
fear
in
Germany's
victims
up
until
the
present
era
.
It
is
this
German
aggression
that
resulted
in the
allied
separation
of
Germany
, and the
development
of
East
and
West
German
cultures
The
Marshall
Plan
was the
instrument
used
to
introduce
and
inject
economic
development
into the
crippled
post-war
West
German
economy
.
However
, its
premise
was the
joining
of
German
institutions
alongside
European
supranational
institutions
in the
hopes
of
diluting
German
nationalism's
strength
. This
is
the
beginning
of the
German
adoption
of the
American
federalist
model
of
government
, and the
rewriting
of
immigration
policy
and
other
social
,
constitutional
measures
and
laws
.
West
Germans
and
East
Germans
are at
present
continually
struggling
with the
legacy
of the
past
fifty
years
and
post-reunification's
slow
progress
,
which
calls
into
question
the
nature
of the
catalyst
for
reunification's
occurrence
. The
assurance
of
Germany's
economic
stability
tied
to a
united
Europe
has
produced
for
German
business
a
global
presence
where
the
effects
of
globalization
allow
continued
success
and
growth
to be a
part
of
integration
.
However
,
it
is
neither
reunification
that
produced
integration
in
Europe
nor
European
integration
that
resulted
in
reunification
.
It
is
rather
the
necessity
of
both
existing
together
,
which
brought
about
the
need
for
both
Germany
and
Europe
as
separate
parts
to
add
to the
whole
of
integration
in
Europe
.
Germany
does
not
lack
the
ability
to
reinvent
itself
, an
examination
of
German
history
,
reveals
constitutional
,
political
and
social
evolution
in
Germany
,
which
is
disproving
some
outmoded
"
truths.
" This
thesis
portrays
a
more
balanced
picture
of a
maturing
nation
.
