Notes
Most
historians
argue
that
missionaries
have been
complicit
agents
of the
colonizing
powers
,
paving
the
way
for
more
complete
domination
of the
indigenous
peoples
living
in the
colonized
areas
.
Yet
there are a
few
historians
who
maintain
the
missionaries
'
role
was
less
manipulative
;
missionaries
provided
those they
evangelized
with the
opportunities
to
gain
education
,
new
ideas
, and a
new
religion
. This
thesis
found
missionaries
in the
Caribbean
are
more
accurately
described
as
agents
of
change
rather
than
agents
of the
colonizing
power
.
Missionaries
to the
Caribbean
differed
from those in
other
colonies
in that they
interacted
with the
white
colonists
and the
slaves
since
no
indigenous
peoples
lived
there. In
Barbados
there were
three
different
British
missionary
organizations
, and they had
diverse
experiences
with the
white
planters
. The
planters
despised
the
Methodists
, were
ambivalent
to the
Anglicans
, and
accepted
the
Society
for the
Propagation
of the
Gospel
in
Foreign
Parts
(hereafter
SPG)
as
one
of their
own
. This
thesis
examined
the
ideas
and
practices
of the
British
missionary
groups
in
Barbados
between
the
years
of
1819
to
1834
in
order
to
understand
the
scope
of their
missions
and
why
the
Methodists
and the
Anglicans
differed
from the
SPG
to
such
an
extent
that they
infuriated
the
planters
. What
became
evident
is
that
while
all
three
worked
to
convert
the
slaves
and had
similar
theology
, the
Methodists
and the
Anglicans
adopted
Enlightenment
thought
into their
Christianity
. The
SPG
was
unable
or
unwilling
to
adopt
similar
Enlightenment
principles
because
they were
deeply
invested
in their
sugar
plantation
estate
and the
college
it
financed
. The
concepts
of
freedom
,
progress
,
reason
, and
happiness
were
contrary
to the
plantocratic
society
of
which
they were a
part
. The
Methodists
and
Anglicans
,
however
,
blended
these
Enlightenment
ideals
with
Christian
principles
in their
sermons
and
preached
these
new
ideas
to
both
planters
and
slaves
.
Thus
,
even
though
they
did
not
preach
the
end
of
slavery
, their
ideas
,
both
religious
and
secular
,
foretold
its
imminent
end
.
Despite
persecution
by the
colonial
authorities
, these
two
groups
continued
to
promote
the
new
concepts
.
It
is
likely
that the
spread
of their
ideas
ultimately
prepared
Barbados
for
slave
emancipation
because
they
included
basic
religious
rights
for the
slaves
,
such
as
education
. The
transition
from
slavery
to
emancipation
in
Barbados
was
peaceable
, and
undoubtedly
, the
missionaries
'
work
contributed
to the
smooth
change
.
