Notes
The
Rocky
Hill
anticline
is
a
broad
open
fold
in
Triassic
strata
transverse
to the
Eastern
Border
Fault
of the
Connecticut
Valley
of
Southern
New
England
, and
is
crisscrossed
by a
complex
pattern
of
faults
and
other
brittle
fractures
. This
study
strives
to
explain
relationships
between
faults
and
fractures
and the
stress
field(s)
responsible
for the
folding
of the
strata
that
comprise
the
structure
. In
order
to
understand
the
fracture
pattern
, the
trend
and
plunge
of the
axial
line
,
attitude
of the
axial
plane
, and
inter-limb
angle
are
determined
.
600
fractures
and
faults
in a
4
square
mile
area
are
evaluated
for
34
characteristics
(strike
,
dip
,
mineralization
,
slickenlines
,
etc)
in a
database
capable
of
searching
for
trends
amongst
the
dataset
.
Coeval
fracture
populations
,
conjugate
shear
fractures
,
stress
fields
, and
rotation
of
stress
fields
are
determined
.
Contemporaneous
populations
of
fractures
and
faults
are
compared
to
models
for
fractures
forming
before
,
during
, and
after
deformation
of the
strata
.
Results
of this
study
are
juxtaposed
to
models
in the
literature
for
fracture
development
in the
Connecticut
Valley
. The
axial
plane
of the
anticline
dips
88°
to the
southwest
, with an
axial
orientation
of
118°
, and
axial
plunge
of
4°
downward
toward
the
southeast
. An
inter-limb
angle
of
176°
separates
the
northern
limb
of the
fold
,
which
dips
14°
down
to the
northeast
from the
southern
limb
,
which
dips
10°
down
to the
southwest
. The
Rocky
Hill
anticline
most
likely
formed
due
to
regional
compression
with
synfold
motion
in a
wrench
tectonic
setting
.
Greatest
compressive
stress
,
01
, was
directed
horizontally
from the
north-northeast
.
Shortening
was
accommodated
by
dextral
strikeslip
along
north-northwest
trending
faults
, and
sinistral
strike-slip
along
northeast
trending
faults
.
Some
of these
faults
may
have been
pre-existing
fractures
,
re-activated
by the
compressive
stress
field
responsible
for
folding
of the
anticline
. The
stress
field
responsible
for the
majority
of the
faults
and
presumably
for the
formation
of the
anticline
,
rotated
counter-clockwise
through
time
from
lower
to
higher
stratigraphic
position
. The
Rocky
Hill
anticline
was also
cut
by
northeast
trending
fractures
after
formation
of the
fold
, and
subsequent
sinistral
shearing
occurred
along
some
of these,
offsetting
the
folded
strata
.
