Notes
The
purpose
of this
study
was to
examine
Binge
Eating
Disorder
(BED)
,
Night
Eating
Syndrome
(NES)
,
depression
,
anxiety
,
self-esteem
, and
weight
regain
in
weight
loss
(bariatric)
surgery
patients
, at a
minimum
of
two
years
postoperatively
.
Ninety-six
participants
who
had
either
Gastric
Bypass
or
Lap-Band
surgery
were
recruited
from an
online
weight
loss
surgery
support
group
. The
comparison
group
of
52
obese
individuals
who
had not
undergone
weight
loss
surgery
was
recruited
from the
same
website
. A
control
group
of
38
non-obese
individuals
who
did
not have
weight
loss
surgery
was
recruited
by
referral
from the
individuals
who
chose
to
participate
.
Via
email
, the
186
participants
filled
out
a
survey
which
assessed
various
aspects
of
disordered
eating
.
Instruments
used
were the
Questionnaire
on
Eating
and
Weight
Patterns-
Revised
(QEWP-R)
, the
Night
Eating
Syndrome
Interview
(NESI)
, the
Rosenberg
Self-Esteem
Scale
(RSE)
, the
Beck
Anxiety
Inventory
(BAI)
, and the
Beck
Depression
Inventory
(BDI)
. The
hypotheses
were that
a)
both
types
of
weight
loss
surgery
patients
would have
less
binge
eating
and
night
eating
episodes
,
lower
depression
and
anxiety
scores
, and
higher
self-esteem
scores
than the
obese
individuals
,
b)
weight
loss
surgery
patients
would have
more
binge
eating
and
night
eating
episodes
,
higher
depression
and
anxiety
scores
, and
lower
self-esteem
scores
than
non-obese
individuals
, and
c)
weight
regain
would be
greater
in
weight
loss
surgery
patients
with
greater
disordered
eating
,
impaired
self-esteem
,
depression
, and
anxiety
. The
results
generally
supported
the
hypotheses
, and
showed
that
a)
weight
loss
surgery
patients
had
less
binge
eating
episodes
,
depression
, and
anxiety
and
better
self-esteem
than
obese
individuals
,
while
there was
no
evidence
of a
significant
difference
in
night
eating
;
b)
weight
loss
surgery
patients
were not
significantly
different
than the
non-obese
group
on
binge
eating
or
anxiety
, but were
significantly
higher
on
night
eating
and
depression
, and
lower
on
self-esteem
; and
c)
weight
regain
was
greater
in
weight
loss
surgery
patients
who
exhibited
night
eating
,
higher
levels
of
depression
and
anxiety
, and
lower
self-esteem
. The
results
indicated
that
psychological
(depression
,
anxiety
,
self-esteem)
and
behavioral
(night
eating)
variables
were
related
to
post-op
weight
regain
in
both
surgical
conditions
.
NES
was a
prevalent
disorder
in
obese
individuals
, was
just
as
prevalent
in
weight
loss
surgery
participants
, and was
positively
related
to
weight
regain
two
years
postoperatively
.
NES
should be
investigated
as a
distinct
eating
disorder
,
particularly
in
relation
to
obese
and
weight
loss
surgery
populations
.
