Notes
This
qualitative
inquiry
investigated
whether
the
integration
of
art-making
could
enhance
children's
reading
comprehension
and
recall
skills
. With the
implementation
of an
extra-curricular
after
school
club
,
I
was
able
to
utilize
interventions
that would be
most
beneficial
after
careful
reflection
on how
children
were
responding
to
each
of the
activities
through
an
action
research
organizational
structure
.
Some
of the
interventions
included
making
art
after
the
reading
process
and at
different
stages
throughout
the
reading
process
. The
art
activities
conducted
included
painting
and
drawing
with a
variety
of
artistic
media
through
activities
such
as
summative
artwork
,
storyboards
, and
sequential
illustrations
based
on the
reading
. In
addition
,
we
also
read
and
reflected
upon
stories
through
group
discussion
rather
than
creating
art
. This
allowed
me
to
compare
how
well
children
recalled
facts
about
the
story
in
both
circumstances
. The
participants
of this
study
included
third
and
fourth
graders
who
enjoyed
both
art
and
reading
each
to
varying
degrees
. The
students
had the
opportunity
to
engage
in the
Art
and
Reading
Club
from
February
through
May
of
2004
. The
data
collected
included
questionnaires
completed
by
both
members
and their
parents
before
and
after
the
clubs
'
duration
in
order
to
determine
whether
their
experiences
had any
effect
on their
interests
and
perceptions
of
art-making
or
reading
.
Reading
comprehension
and
recall
were also
tested
through
a
variety
of
assessments
. In
addition
,
I
attempted
to
observe
the
students
'
progress
of
including
story
details
in their
artwork
and
sequencing
the
story
appropriately
. The
findings
indicated
that
students
provided
more
in
depth
writings
recalling
what they had
read
when
they were
given
the
opportunity
to
reflect
on the
story
through
art-making
,
particularly
when
it
was
included
throughout
the
reading
process
,
rather
than as a
reflective
activity
after
the
text
had been
read
.
Findings
also
indicated
additional
benefits
to the
children
that
went
beyond
the
research
question
. These
benefits
included
:
(a)
an
increased
confidence
in their
artistic
abilities
,
(b)
increased
engagement
in
leisure
time
art-making
and
reading
activities
,
(c)
increased
interest
in
making
art
based
on the
stories
they
read
, and
(d)
an
increased
understanding
of the
significance
of
visual
literacy
.
Parents
also
indicated
that this
club
experience
had
positive
effects
on their
children
,
including
increased
dialogue
about
stories
the
students
were
reading
with their
families
as
well
as an
ability
to be
more
descriptive
when
retelling
those
stories
to
others
.
