Title
Yeat's
liberation
and the
search
for
spiritual
truth

Notes
This
thesis
will
examine
the
first
person
character
in the
poetry
of
W
.
B
.
Yeats
in
order
to
illustrate
a
theme
of
liberation
.
Liberation
for
Yeats
means
a
freeing
of
oneself
from
mere
memory
, or
events
, by
converting
them into a
poetic
mythology
. The
thesis
will also
examine
how
many
of
Yeats7s
most
accomplished
poems
enact
a
later
moment
in
which
memory
is
manipulated
by
experience
and
poetic
knowledge
, how the "
I
"
character
relives
the
event
as a
masked
version
of the
self
that has
experienced
it
. His
mask
theory
is
a
much-discussed
concept
in
Yeats
studies
,
particularly
by
Richard
Ellmann
(Yeats
: The
Man
and the
Masks)
,
who
examines
Yeats's
development
in
terms
of
dramatic
roles
taken
on in his
life
.
My
inquiry
will
redefine
Yeats's
mask
as a
device
, the
reinvented
first
person
character
of the
poems
, the
hero
of the
revised
life
of the
poet
. As
Ellmann
has
commented
of
Yeats
, "He
must
pit
himself
against
the
world
directly
and
prove
to
it
and to
himself
that a
dreamer
can
beat
it
at its
own
game
"
(290)
.
Proof
occurs
for
Yeats
within
his
poems
. As
Thomas
Parkinson
has
stated
in
W.B
.
Yeats
: The
Later
Poetry
, "The
origin
of
knowledge
is
not in the
poet
but in the
poem
,
which
he
must
consult
for
knowledge
"
(4)
. For
Yeats
, this
wish
to
know
truth
is
enacted
within
his
poetry
,
reemerging
h
m
a
past
memory
as a
newly
created
self
to
engage
in the
actions
of the
past
.
Yeats
believes
that the
process
of the
poem
is
an
action
that, as
Parkinson
states
,
can
"
serve
up
truth
" and "
separate
it
from
person
,
so
that
knowledge
of the
world
of
self
is
genuinely
selfless
"
(4)
. This
universal
staging
of
personal
life
occurs
everywhere
in
Yeats's
poetry
.
Taking
aspects
from
Ellrnann's
idea
of the
self-dramatizing
Yeats
, and of
Parkinson's
focus
upon
the
poems
themselves
, this
thesis
will
show
that this
creative
process
of
self-characterization
is
not
merely
a
general
effect
in
Yeats
, but a
way
of
reading
a
dramatic
progression
within
the
poems
. In
effect
,
Yeats's
"
I
"
character
emerges
fiom
the
poem
,
which
dramatizes
a
past
event
as a
present
action
, with a
liberating
wisdom
.
I
wish
to
show
that the
meaning
of the
poem
can
be
revealed
to the
reader
in
much
the
same
way
that
it
may
have
become
a
revelation
to the
poet
. By
looking
at
specific
poems
throughout
his
career
,
I
hope
to
contribute
to the
understanding
of the
evolution
of
Yeats
, as
Ellmann
states
, from a
man
of "
skepticism
and
superstition
to
knowledge
and
faith
"
(291)
.
