Outer
Island
is
one
of the
Thimble
Islands
located
just
off
the
shoreline
of
Stony
Creek
,
Connecticut
. The
island
is
about
0.02
square
kilometers
in
size
and
measures
approximately
250
meters
long
and
90
meters
wide
. The
purpose
of this
study
was to
make
collections
of
macroalgal
specimens
from
intertidal
areas
and
learn
about
their
history
and
uses
. The
intertidal
zone
is
both
a
marine
and
terrestrial
habitat
where
dominant
species
can
be
found
in
vertical
zonation
. The
study
at
Outer
Island
in
Branford
,
Connecticut
was
conducted
from
May
2001
to
September
2001
during
low
tides
.
It
consisted
of
collecting
and
later
identifying
several
species
,
which
included
:
Agardhiella
subulata
,
Ascophyllum
nodosum
,
Bryopsis
plumosa
,
Ceramium
nodulosum
,
Chaetomorpha
aerea
,
Chaetomorpha
linum
,
Chondrus
crispus
,
Codium
fragile
spp
.
tomentosoides
,
Corallina
officinalis
,
Dasya
baillouviana
,
Enteromorpha
intestinalis
,
Enteromorpha
linza
,
Fucus
spiralis
,
Fucus
vesiculosus
,
Gracilaria
tikvahiae
,
Polysiphonia
denudata
,
Polysiphonia
harveyi
,
Porphyra
umbilicalis
,
Sargassum
filipendula
, and
Ulva
lactuca
.
After
identifying
the
above
specimens
,
literature
research
was
conducted
on their
possible
applications
,
which
include
the
importance
of
algae
in
medicine
, the
food
industry
, and as
fodder
and
fertilizer
.
Details
on
possible
uses
of the
collected
species
, and
information
about
their
edibility
, are
included
.
