Abstract
The
purpose
of this
study
was to
document
,
measure
and
compare
growth
in
reading
performance
of
four
remedial
third
graders
in
two
selected
Jamaican
schools
. To
accomplish
this
task
the
researcher
designed
and
piloted
FRIP
,
Foster
Reading
Intervention
Program
,
aimed
at
immersing
third
grade
readers
for
six
consecutive
weeks
in
pull
out
literacy
activities
. The
program
was
piloted
in
two
selected
Jamaican
schools
,
one
urban
and
one
suburban
school
.
Two
students
,
one
male
and
one
female
were
selected
from
each
school
to
participate
in the
study
.
Participants
were
selected
based
on the
following
criteria
.
(1)
Recommendation
by the
former
and
present
teachers
as
struggling
readers
(2)
Performance
on
Third
Grade
Diagnostic
Test
and
report
card
showed
that they were
performing
below
grade
level
(3)
Interviews
with
parents
(4)
Classroom
observation
.
Data
were
collected
,
analyzed
and
reported
using
individual
and
group
reading
growth
.
Data
sources
include
pre
and
post
test
,
mid-treatment
tests
and
case
study
. The
case
study
approach
was
used
throughout
the
study
.
Results
were
reported
using
average
percentages
in
individual
and
group
reading
growth
.
Analysis
of
data
revealed
that
students
have
made
significant
improvement
in their
reading
performance
.
Participants
made
maximum
growth
of
8
%
-
55
reading
growth
. The
findings
of the
study
have
revealed
that
(1)
All
children
can
learn
once
they are
placed
in a
stimulating
environment
with the
appropriate
instructional
materials
and
equipment
.
(2)
Parental
involvement
in
children’s
learning
does
have
positive
impact
on their
ability
to
mastery
literacy
activities
.
(3)
In
spite
of the
compounding
factors
that
contribute
to
students’
failure
in
literacy
learning
it
is
the
teacher’s
responsibility
to
provide
that
stimulating
learning
environment
that will
foster
learning
. The
study
seeks
to
strengthen
the
understanding
of
educators
,
stakeholder
,
policy
makers
and
curriculum
developers
in
Jamaica
who
are
interested
in
implementing
intervention
programs
for
struggling
readers
. The
findings
have
strengthened
a
number
of
researches
that
promote
the
need
for
early
intervention
programs
.
