Notes
The
purpose
of this
study
is
to
evaluate
the
effects
of
first
grade
phonics
instruction
using
"The
O'Brien
Marking
System.
" This
marking
method
was
developed
to
make
students
more
aware
of the
sounds
that
letters
make
, and
thereby
sound
out
words
more
accurately
and
fluently
.
Two
first
grade
classes
participated
in the
study
.
Both
were
daily
taught
the
basic
rules
for
phonics
and
completed
assignments
in their
phonics
workbooks
.
Class
B
was also
instructed
in how to
utilize
"The
O'Brien
Marking
System
" in
addition
to
completing
the
workbook
pages
.
Class
A
only
relied
on the
information
presented
within
the
phonics
workbook
, and
did
not
receive
instruction
on the
marking
method
. The
basic
elements
of
phonics
were
taught
daily
to
both
classes
. At the
end
of
each
workbook
unit
all
students
were
tested
on the
material
covered
. At the
end
of the
study
both
groups
were
assessed
by
reading
nonsense
words
that
contained
short
and
long
vowels
,
blends
,
digraphs
and
other
"
special
combinations
" that
go
together
.
Class
B
did
slightly
better
on
most
unit
tests
when
compared
to
Class
A.
Class
B
scored
significantly
higher
than
Class
A on the
nonsense
word
evaluation
.
Because
"The
O'Brien
Marking
System
" has
aided
the
students
in
Class
B
to
better
grasp
phonic
knowledge
and
apply
it
,
teachers
should be
motivated
to
utilize
this
creative
marking
method
with their
classes
. The
results
of the
study
have
indicated
that
adding
this
marking
system
to an
existing
phonics
program
can
only
aid
in the
process
of
teaching
children
how to
decode
more
accurately
,
hence
become
better
readers
.
