Notes	The present study explores the association between gun control laws, the extent of handgun ownership, and the amount of homicide committed with handguns. Data from the year 1990 was obtained for all 50 states plus the District of Columbia. States were coded for the presence of 7 different types of gun control measures, regulating both the sale and possession of handguns. Handgun ownership levels were estimated based upon 4 indirect measures. The number of homicides committed with handguns during 1990 was obtained for each state. T-tests were used to compare the mean amount of handgun ownership and homicide between states that did and did not place restrictions on handgun sales and/or possession; determining if states with increased regulation of handguns possessed significantly lower levels of handgun ownership and homicide. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine the nature if the relationship between gun laws, ownership, and homicide. The results indicate that 1) handgun ownership levels were significantly lower in states which required handgun purchasers to submit to a screening process in which law enforcement officials conduct a background check, verifying a purchaser's legal eligibility to purchase/possess a handgun, 2) there were no significant differences in the amount of homicides committed with handguns, 3) purchaser screening laws explained some of the difference in the extent of handgun ownership levels, and 4) the extent of handgun ownership explained some of the variation in the number of homicides committed with handguns.
