Notes
The
focus
of this
thesis
is
to
investigate
,
illustrate
, and
understand
why
the
cult
of
virginity
was and
remains
to be
so
important
in
Catholicism
.
Further
,
when
did
this
phenomenon
of
virginity
start
?
Why
was the
emphasis
on
maintaining
a
celibate
life
placed
more
on
women
then on
men
? What
influenced
these
ideas
and
helped
to
develop
them
within
Christianity
? These are
some
of the
questions
that
I
am
investigating
in this
thesis
.
I
am
providing
a
background
that will
serve
as a
foundation
for the
cult
of
virginity
. This
historical
background
will
take
a
look
at
earlier
societies
and also at
early
Christian
societies
and what
role
virginity
played
within
them.
Moreover
,
I
am
looking
at
why
these
societies
and how these
societies
influenced
Christianity
. These
societies
also
serve
as a
foundation
through
which
will be
illustrated
the
cult
of
virginity's
role
in
non-Christian
societies
and its
influence
in
Christianity
,
using
various
historical
texts
and
resources
.
Additionally
,
I
am
writing
on the
prevailing
perceptions
of
women
and the
importance
of
virginity
.
I
then
use
the
writings
of
several
Early
Christian
writers
to
show
how these
writers
encouraged
and
supported
celibacy
,
paticularly
for
women
.
Further
,
I
also
attempt
to
explain
why
virginity
was
so
important
and what
role
it
played
in the
lives
of
women
.
Included
with the
various
writings
by the
early
Christian
writers
are the
products
of
John
Chrysostom
,
Ambrose
and
Augustine
.
I
then
begin
my
discussion
of
early
Christian
literature
starting
with the
treatise
On
Virginity
written
by
John
Chrysostom
in the
late
fourth
century
.
I
continue
this
discussion
using
the
treatise
Holy
Virginity
written
by
St
Augustine
around
the
year
401
.
Additionally
,
writings
of
Jerome
and
Ambrose
are
used
.
Further
support
and
explanation
is
offered
through
the
works
of
various
religious
theological
historians
. This
thesis
clearly
demonstrates
that the
cult
of
virginity
and the
importance
placed
on a
chaste
lifestyle
by
early
Christian
,
writers
was not
just
about
the
physical
body
. Its
main
importance
was that
virginity
was a
spiritual
and
symbolic
action
that
served
the
physical
world
as
well
as the
spiritual
world
.
Generally
, that
service
to and of the
spiritual
world
is
of
much
greater
significance
.
I
am
also
providing
an
explanation
with
supporting
evidence
to what
I
believe
is
the
reason
that
virginity
was
much
more
important
for a
woman
to
maintain
than for a
man
.
