counseling
students
to

in the

: an

Master's Thesis
Notes
This
thesis
addressed
the
ethical
issues
involved
with
evaluating
counseling
students
'
personal
characteristics
during
classes
that
involve
self-disclosure
. To
accomplish
this, an
historical
look
was
taken
,
first
, at
self-disclosure
and its
relationship
to
mental
health
and
counselor
effectiveness
.
Special
attention
was
given
to
appropriate
self-disclosure
and the
ability
to
monitor
disclosing
behavior
.
Disclosure
flexibility
, a
concept
developed
by
Chelune
(1977)
, was
described
as the
ability
to
perceive
social
cues
and
adapt
one's
self-disclosures
accordingly
. This
concept
was
examined
closely
and its
relationship
to
interpersonal
functioning
and
counselor
effectiveness
was
explored
.
Secondly
, this
paper
explored
the
issue
of
evaluating
counseling
student's
self-disclosure
in the
counseling
classroom
. This
began
with an
historical
look
at the
personal
growth
of the
counseling
student
and the
use
of the
personal
growth
group
in
counseling
programs
.
It
looked
at the
differences
between
the
didactic
approach
and the
experiential
approach
in the
education
of
counselors
and how the
integration
of the
two
became
popular
.
Additionally
, this
paper
discussed
how the
combination
of the
two
approaches
facilitated
the
integration
of
didactic
learning
with the
personal
values
,
goals
and
lifestyle
of the
student
.
Thirdly
, this
paper
addressed
the
ethical
implications
involved
when
educators
or
supervisors
participate
in the
personal
growth
activities
of
students
.
It
looked
at the
educator's
ethical
responsibility
to
protect
the
privacy
of their
students
and how this
conflicts
with their
obligation
to
protect
consumers
from
incompetent
counselors
.
It
discussed
how
being
privy
to a
student's
self-disclosure
in the
personal
growth
group
creates
a
conflict
when
what
is
disclosed
provides
evidence
of the
students
'
unsuitability
for the
profession
.
Additionally
,
it
offered
a
close
look
at the
experiential
group
and how
current
models
of the
group
,
more
often
than not,
violate
student
privacy
rights
.
Fourthly
, this
paper
examined
the
appropriate
use
of
self-disclosure
in the
counseling
classroom
.
It
examined
the
literature
currently
available
on this
topic
and
reviewed
what
educators
are
currently
doing
to
train
students
to
use
appropriate
self-disclosure
.
Additionally
,
recommendations
were
made
to
improve
current
programs
designed
to
train
students
to
use
appropriate
self-disclosure
in the
counseling
classroom
.
Finally
,
educators
were
asked
to
examine
their
motives
for
introducing
the
evaluative
component
into the
experiential
group
. They were
reminded
of the
extensive
opportunity
they have to
fulfill
their
gate-keeping
function
elsewhere
in the
curriculum
, and
strongly
urged
to
remove
the
evaluative
component
from the
experiential
group
.
