Notes
The
Christian
resistance
in
France
fought
an
energetic
and
indispensable
struggle
against
Nazism
in a
variety
of
ways
.
It
is
the
purpose
of this
thesis
to
illuminate
this
struggle
in its
uniqueness
of
origin
, and in its
silent
legacy
. This
resistance
movement
, from its
inception
, was
one
of
Christian
faith
catalyzed
by
patriotic
scope
. This
thesis
will
contribute
to
clarifying
aspects
of the
Christian
resistance
and
crediting
its
role
in the
fight
against
Nazi
Germany
. The
Christian
resistance
in
France
during
the
second
world
war
is
still
little
known
mainly
for
two
reasons
.
Firstly
,
recent
research
concerning
the
official
collaboration
of the
Catholic
Church
and, to a
lesser
degree
, the
Protestant
churches
, with
Hitler's
regime
has
come
to
light
. The
official
stance
of the
churches
with the
Vichy
government
has
sparked
the
interest
of
researchers
, but
acts
as a
block
to any
light
that
can
be
shed
on the
reality
of the
clandestine
Christian
resistance
.
Secondly
,
one
can
recognize
the
existence
of a
misplaced
humility
in the
Christian
attitude
which
at
times
will not
attribute
merit
for
acts
accomplished
in
unison
with
divine
grace
, but will
defer
instead
entirely
to that
grace
. This
humility
,
while
meritorious
in its
selflessness
, has
left
the
accomplishments
and
travails
of the
Christian
resistance
largely
in
obscurity
until
recent
years
. The
Christian
resistance
in
France
is
a
subject
that
seems
to be of
recent
interest
to the
French
public
reflected
in the
publication
of a
selection
of
books
concerning
the
religious
history
of the
war
in
France
.
Judging
by these
recently
published
books
(not
yet
in
translation
in the
United
States)
, there
is
, at this
time
, a
growing
desire
to
know
and
examine
more
closely
the
Christian
resistance
. This
thesis
will
recognize
its
sacrifices
and
struggles
as
well
as its
work
and
accomplishments
.
It
is
hoped
that a
contribution
will be
made
to
bring
an
end
to the
silence
surrounding
this
active
Christian
engagement
in the
fight
against
Nazism
. This
study
will not
attempt
to
present
a
political
perspective
of the
Christian
resistance
. On the
contrary
, this
resistance
was
born
outside
of the
political
sphere
and its
development
began
well
before
the
armistice
in
1940
.
It
is
on the
spiritual
plane
that the
resistance
was
born
in
order
to
confront
the
neno-pagan
origins
and the
fundamental
anti-Christian
views
of
Nazism
. An
in-depth
examination
of the
collaborationist
stance
of the
Catholique
or
Protestant
churches
will not be
contained
in this
treatise
either
except
for
incidental
references
.
It
will
obviously
be
necessary
to
speak
of the
official
position
of the
established
churches
,
however
, their
collaboration
with the
Vichy
government
is
the
subject
of a
variety
of
recent
books
and
it
beyond
the
field
of this
study
. This
treatise
will
limit
itself
to the
Christian
resistance
, but will
refer
to the
Jewish
resistance
as
well
since
there was a
coordination
between
the
two
resistance
movements
in
order
to
save
the
Jews
of
France
.
However
, the
Jewish
resistance
,
spiritual
also in
origin
, but
different
in its
course
and
destiny
because
of the
gravity
of the
Nazi
persecution
, has been the
topic
of a
number
of
works
, and,
because
of the
limits
of this
analysis
, will not be
included
as an
integral
part
. The
French
Christian
resistance
is
unique
in its
inception
because
it
began
with the
warnings
of
German
theologians
following
their
analysis
of the
anti-religious
nature
of
Nazism
and the
incidents
of
Christian
persecution
in
Germany
once
Hitler
came
to
power
in
1933
.
Therefore
,
it
is
essential
to
begin
with a
study
of these
writings
in
order
to
comprehend
the
spiritual
inspiration
of the
members
of the
French
Christian
resistance
who
learned
of the
German
precedents
and
tried
to
prepare
for the
same
eventualities
in
France
. The
first
chapter
of this
thesis
will
examine
this
unique
beginning
. The
development
of the
Christian
resistance
will
show
the
challenge
of the
resistance
groups
with the
collaboration
of the
official
churches
. The
Catholics
and the
Protestants
faced
this
confusion
but to
differing
degrees
. This
development
will be the
topic
for
chapter
two
. The
Christian
resistance
knew
a
variety
of
successes
, but was not
without
its
own
dangerous
risks
and
sacrifices
.
Both
will be
presented
and
examined
in
chapter
three
.
Finally
, in its
conclusion
, this
thesis
will
address
the
silence
that has
surrounded
this
aspect
of
France's
religious
history
during
the
war
and will
examine
its
causes
.
