Notes
For
considerable
time
, there has been
growing
concern
about
work
stress
and its
impact
on
radiographers
and
other
healthcare
professionals
. At the
same
time
,
studies
have
recognized
that
some
personal
traits
may
prevent
work-related
tension
from
becoming
stress-related
health
problems
. The
present
study
examined
the
relationship
between
occupational
stress
and
burnout
in
hospital-employed
radiographers
and
whether
personality
hardiness
moderated
the
stress-burnout
relationship
. The
specific
hypotheses
of the
study
were:
(1)
burnout
would
correlate
positively
with
occupational
stress
and that an
inverse
relationship
would
exist
between
personality
hardiness
and
burnout
; and
(2)
hardiness
would be a
moderator
for
stress
, that
is
,
personality
hardiness
would
reduce
the
stress-burnout
relationship
,
particularly
at
higher
levels
of
stress
.
Ninety-five
registered
radiographers
employed
at
eight
hospitals
in
Connecticut
completed
three
questionnaires
that
assessed
sources
of
stress
,
personality
hardiness
and
burnout
. A
hierarchical
(forward)
linear
regression
indicated
that
both
stress
and
personality
hardiness
were
significant
predictors
of
burnout
. As
hypothesized
,
burnout
was
positively
associated
with
higher
levels
of
occupational
stress
and
negatively
correlated
with
higher
levels
of
personality
hardiness
. To
test
the
second
hypothesis
, a
hierarchical
regression
analysis
was
used
to
examine
the
stress-hardiness
interaction
.
No
evidence
of an
interaction
was
found
,
thus
the
study
did
not
provide
support
for the
stress
buffering
effect
of
hardiness
.
Additional
analyses
revealed
that
one
of the
three
dimensions
of
hardiness
,
commitment
to
work
, was the
only
variable
to
account
for
significant
amount
of
variance
across
levels
of
burnout
.
Implications
of these
results
were
discussed
in
terms
of
recent
changes
in
healthcare
services
and how
hardiness
training
,
work
support
and
coping
strategies
could
be
resources
for
managing
work
stress
and
burnout
.
