Notes
The
primary
objective
of this
study
was to
test
the
effects
of
caffeine
on
cigarette
smoking
.
Two
hundred
male
and
female
smokers
who
were
customers
of
Sullivan
Banquet
Hall
and
Bar
, a
drinking
establishment
, were
asked
to
drink
one
of
five
different
beverages
and
rate
their
desire
for a
cigarette
. There were
five
groups
of
forty
in
which
each
group
drank
either
orange
juice
,
decaffeinated
cola
,
caffeinated
cola
,
decaffeinated
coffee
or
caffeinated
coffee
. The
decaffeinated
coffee
was
99.7%
caffeine
free
due
to
a.003%
of
caffeine
naturally
produced
in the
actual
coffee
bean
.
Each
participant
was then
asked
to
rate
his/her
desire
for a
cigarette
on a
seven
point
likert
scale
.
Each
group
was
asked
to
do
the
procedure
eleven
times
,
once
before
they
started
drinking
their
assigned
beverage
and
ten
times
after
in
one
minute
intervals
.
Results
showed
a
significant
difference
in the
effects
between
the
caffeinated
beverages
with a
mean
of
4.70
compared
to the
decaffeinated
beverages
with a
mean
of
2.88
.
Results
also
showed
that the
caffeinated
coffee
condition
had the
greatest
effect
on
smokers
with a
mean
of
3.41
.
Results
showed
that
male
smokers
were
affected
more
overall
compared
to
female
smokers
. Also
male
smokers
rated
higher
on the
orange
juice
,
decaffeinated
cola
and
caffeinated
conditions
.
Female
smokers
rated
higher
on the
decaffeinated
coffee
and
caffeinated
coffee
conditions
. The
caffeinated
coffee
condition
resulted
in the
highest
ratings
for
both
men
and
women
.
