Notes
The
Second
World
War
has
profoundly
impacted
French
literature
from its
onset
and
continuing
to
today
. The
literary
work
of
Marguerite
Duras
is
tied
to this
period
not
only
through
the
events
of her
life
during
the
Occupation
of
France
and her
political
involvement
, but
especially
through
her
acute
sensibility
for the
period
found
in her
work
.
Marguerite
Duras
published
in
1985
forty
years
after
the
war
,
La
Douleur
,
much
of
which
is
based
on a
journal
she
wrote
in
1945
.
Although
she
mentions
marginally
or in
brief
circumstances
of the
war
in
works
,
e.g.
,
Hiroshima
Mon
Amour
,
Auréilia
Steiner
,
dit
Aurélia
Melbourne
,
Les
yeux
vert
,
Outside
and
L'Amant
, this
thesis
will
examine
La
Douleur
which
deals
entirely
with
events
occurring
during
World
War
II
. The
thesis
is
a
literary
study
of the
themes
of
guilt
,
sorrow
and
memory
as they
appear
in the
text
of
La
Douleur
. In this
work
which
raises
historical
as
well
as
autobiographical
evidence
,
Duras
draws
from her
actual
experience
of the
Second
World
War
. She
reawakens
intimate
circumstances
,
which
are
particularly
difficult
,
sensitive
and
painful
. An
analysis
of this
work
will
reveal
the
guilt
and
sorrow
felt
by
Duras
and how
guilt
and
sorrow
interact
with her
memory
. A
stylistic
and
linguistic
approach
at this
text
will
establish
the
correlation
of the
themes
on a
literary
scale
. In
order
to
better
understand
the
war
years
and
Duras
'
behavior
, the
study
begins
with a
brief
summary
of
events
in
France
during
World
War
II
,
followed
by a
biographical
sketch
of the
unfolding
of her
life
as a
child
in
Indochina
up
to and
including
her
life
as a
young
married
woman
starting
her
writing
career
during
the
war
years
,
1939-1945
. An
examination
of this
period
as
well
as the
biographical
details
will
attest
to the
origin
and the
development
of the
themes
of
guilt
,
sorrow
and
memory
, as they
appear
in her
personal
,
professional
as
well
as her
political
life
. This
study
will
reveal
how the
war
years
represent
Marguerite
Duras
and in
turn
how she
reveals
herself
in this
period
.
During
these
years
Duras
'
ambiguous
behavior
is
perceived
as
controversial
and
indiscreet
.
Ascribed
as
detractions
,
aspersions
, the
so-called
Durassian
problems
displayed
at this
time
have
remained
provocative
up
to her
death
in
May
1996
. These
problematic
behaviors
are her
open
marriage
and
many
affairs
, her
friendship
with
collaborators
, her
late
entry
into the
Resistance
, and her
alleged
affair
with a
Gestapo
agent
. The
interpretation
of these
disconcerting
issues
will
reveal
their
development
and their
characteristics
in
order
to
conclude
that they
originate
from or are the
consequences
of the
three
themes
of
guilt
,
sorrow
and
memory
.
Each
theme
will be
presented
in
psychological
terms
but the
study
is
not
based
on
psychoanalysis
.
It
will
concentrate
on
concrete
events
both
personal
and
historic
that
Duras
presents
in her
work
.
Critics
have
considered
the
theme
of
guilt
, of
sorrow
or of
memory
individually
. This
study
argues
that the
three
are
interactive
and
because
of this
interaction
,
it
is
impossible
to
feel
the
depth
of
emotion
eliciting
from
La
Douleur
without
examining
all
three
. In this
period
guilt
and
pain
have
wielded
a
strong
emotion
and
physical
force
over
her
life
and
specifically
over
her
memory
, that for
many
years
Duras
had
avoided
writing
directly
about
it
.
