Notes	The male sterility and histoincompatibility mutation (mshi) is an autosomal recessive mutation that produces apparently pleiotropic effects in mice. Mice homozygous for mshi manifest two distinct phenotypes. In both male and female mice, the mutation causes the loss of a histocompatibility antigen or antigens typically present on the cell surface, which causes the eventual rejection of applied allografts from non-mutant donors. In males alone, mshi causes sterility and reduced testicular mass, due to spermatogonial depletion within the testes. Female mice appear to remain reproductively normal. A high resolution backcross panel and map of mshi has been constructed, which has located this locus on mouse Chromosome 10 to an area of 20 cM between PCR-scorable markers D10Mit51/168/212 and D10Mit170. To further restrict the location, and in an attempt to detect crossovers between the two proposed parts of the mshi mutation (Turner et al., 1997), the backcross panel has been increased to include 276 new panel members, for a total of 402 members. Among these recent additions to the mapping panel are 135 males that have been typed for both sterility and histoincompatibility. Analysis of this panel has isolated mshi within a 1.7 cM interval between the flanking genetic markers D10Mit51/168/212 and D10Mit213 on mouse Chromosome 10, and has detected 7 recombinant mice within this region. In addition, incomplete penetrance of the histocompatibility feature of mshi has been detected and measured, and several previously unresolved microsatellite markers on proximal Chr 10 have been ordered. Although recombinants were not found to separate the two proposed units of mshi in this study, the restriction of the mshi mutation to this small genetic region should facilitate the eventual identification of candidate gene sequences. This may lead to the eventual moleuclar identification of the gene(s) affected by this interesting mutation.
