Notes
As

intended
for
academic

socio-cultural
learning
,
two-way
immersion
programs
are
designed
to
promote
second

and
cultural
learning
. In
general
,
students
co-construct
joint
activity
and
negotiate
meaning
from a
given
activity
when
interacting
with their
peers
.
When
students
use
a
second

in an
immersion

, their
interaction
and
communication
becomes
more
dependent
on the
context
and the
participants
of the
interaction
. The
study’s
conceptual
framework
is
informed
by
Cultural
Historical
Activity
Theory
(Roth

Lee
,
2007)
, and
Sociocultural
Linguistic
Approach
and
Identity
(Bucholtz
&
Hall
,
2005)
. As an
embedded
case
study
of
6
bilingual
students
in
fifth
grade
, this
dissertation
describes
student
interactions
in the
context
of
activity
.
Data
collection
consists
of a
survey
,
classroom
observations
,
student
written
responses
to
language
prompts
, and
student
and
teacher
interviews
. The
findings
describe
how
students
use
English
and
Spanish
to
interact
with
others
, as
well
as
identifying
the
factors
that
influence
their
language
choices
in a
two-way
immersion
program
.
