Notes
Flamenco
is
a
passion
, an
art
, an
identity
and a
culture
. Its
development
over
the
centuries
is
complex
, its
legend
unforgettable
. This
research
will
inform
both
the
aficionado
and the
non-aficionado
of
flamenco's
three
components
(songs
,
dance
and
guitar)
, as
well
as
determine
its
origin
,
famous
founders
,
gypsy
influence
and the
present
impact
it
holds
on the
Spanish
society
. This
investigation
will
begin
with its
historical
background
.
Who
are the
true
birth
parents
of
flamenco
?
Is
there
more
than
one
group
of
inhabitants
that
contributed
to
flamenco
?
Many
authors
consider
flamenco
to be
purely
of
Gypsy
descent
, for its
popularity
came
to
life
through
them.
Others
credit
the
Spanish
because
it
is
their
country
which
has
preserved
and
developed
it
over
thousands
of
years
. A
third
group
believes
it
to be a
combination
of
generations
of
ethnic
residents
occupying
Spain
,
meshing
all
of their
musical
ability
together
.
However
, this
research
will
conclude
that
all
of the
above
factors
created
flamenco
through
cultural
osmosis
. The
Gypsies
,
commonly
known
in
Spanish
as
Los
Gitanos
, will have a
chapter
of their
own
. In
many
respects
they
brought
flamenco
to
life
and
developed
it
to
present
day
.
It
was their
pain
and
suffering
, as
well
as the
influence
of the
Jews
and
Moors
, that
found
relief
in
musical
expression
.
Moreover
their
unique
influences
as a
culture
will
further
be
explored
. The
next
three
chapters
will
discuss
flamenco's
components
:
song
(cante)
,
dance
(baile)
, and
guitar
(toque)
, as
well
as the
famous
artists
who
helped
originate
each
aspect
of
flamenco
. The
song
originated
through
agony
and
sorrow
of the
gypsy
persecution
. As their
music
became
acknowledged
,
musicians
such
as
Diego
el
Fillo
and
El
Planeta
stepped
forward
and
initiated
its
popularity
in the
cafés
.
Without
such
individuals
,
flamenco
would not be as
well
known
as
it
is
today
. The
dance
,
once
only
an
accompaniment
to
song
,
flourished
during
the
early
1900's
and
brought
artists
like
Carmen
Amaya
to the
stage
. The
guitar's
history
began
as
did
the
dance
, as an
enrichment
to
song
, but
grew
steadily
as a
soloist
act
. With the
guitar's
popularity
,
talents
such
as
Ramón
Montoya
and
Paco
de
Lucia
bloomed
. The
last
chapter
incorporates
the
researcher's
findings
obtained
through
oral
interview
. This
study
was
completed
in
Salamanca
,
Spain
,
during
the
summer
of
1997
.
Twenty-five
Spanish
people
were
selected
randomly
to
answer
a
series
of
questions
pertaining
to
flamenco's
origin
and
present
day
popularity
. These
findings
corroborate
other
research
regarding
the
uncertainty
of the
Gypsy's
origin
, the
influence
that the
Gypsy
people
brought
to
flamenco
, and its
impact
on
modern
day
society
. Also, these
interviews
open
new
doors
of
interpretation
.
Depending
on the
age
,
gender
, and
region
of
Spain
from
which
the
participant
originated
, their
responses
varied
greatly
.
Is
flamenco
more
traditional
in
Southern
Spain
versus
other
regions
of the
country
?
Which
generation
of their
society
preserves
flamenco
customs
and
why
?
Do
males
or
females
play
a
larger
role
in this
conservation
? In
essence
all
of these
questions
and their
answers
will
become
apparent
through
this
sampling
,
adding
many
new
answers
to the
art
of
flamenco
as
it
exists
in
Spanish
culture
today
.
