Title
Fundamentalist
Christian
literature
and the
perception
of
womanhood
/
Deena
A.
Martinelli
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
1999
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
A
plethora
of
fundamentalist
Christian
literature
emerged
in the
1970s
and
1980s
as a
retort
to
growing
feminist
ideology
.
Fundamentalist
Christian
authors
today
still
adhere
to
perceived
Biblical
roles
of
womanhood
.
Subsequently
,
women
are
being
told
that
God
created
them to be
wives
,
mothers
and
subservient
partners
to their
husbands
.
It
is
no
wonder
that
feminism
is
strongly
opposed
by
prolific
fundamentalist
Christian
authors
,
such
as
Jerry
Falwell
,
James
Dobson
and
Tim
LaHaya
.
Feminism
is
believed
to
undermine
God's
plan
for the
patriarchal
family
structure
, in
which
husband
is
the
head
.
Therefore
, the
obedience
and
subservience
of
wives
to their
husbands
is
a
common
theme
found
throughout
fundamentalist
Christian
literature
.
It
is
the
intent
of
fundamentalist
Christianity
to
keep
women
as
wives
and
mothers
,
despite
the
contributions
feminism
has
made
to
expanding
the
rights
,
roles
and
definition
of the
female
gender
. The
following
thesis
attempts
to
show
how these
fundamentalist
beliefs
undermine
a
woman's
ability
for
identity
and
self-determination
.
