Title
Perceptions
of
alcohol
use

Master's Thesis
Notes
The
drinking
of
alcoholic
beverages
is
heavily
enculturated
into the
college
experience
. This
study
investigated
the
perceptions
and
statistics
of
drinking
alcohol
at
Central
Connecticut
State
University
(CCSU)
.
Questionnaires
were
distributed
to
358
CCSU
students
during
the
spring
and
fall
semesters
of
1998
.
Responses
were
anonymous
and
compiled
into
group
format
for
data
analysis
.
Results
compared
and
contrasted
perceived
norms
versus
actual
binge
drinking
habits
across
freshman
through
senior
years
.
Students
perceived
that
54.2%
of the
freshman
and
47.1%
of the
seniors
were
binge
drinkers
,
having
at
least
five
or
more
drinks
(four
or
more
if
female)
in the
past
two
weeks
.
However
, this
is
in
striking
contrast
to the
actual
number
of
binge
drinkers
,
which
decreases
from
51.4%
of the
freshmen
to
34.3%
of the
seniors
. There are a
number
of
possible
reasons
to
explain
this
difference
in
binge
drinking
behavior
which
all
seem
to
relate
to a
degree
of
maturity
.
Conclusions
of this
research
will
aid
the
alcohol
prevention
efforts
among
first
year
students
.
