Notes	This study provides an avenue for the integration of diversity appreciation into high school curriculum through literature. The major premise of this thesis is to illustrate how contemporary Latino and Latin American literature can be used as a gateway for exploring and teaching respect for Spanish-American culture and history. Building multicultural education into the curriculum through the use of literature creates the possibility for better understanding of the Latino population. According to the U.S. Bureau of Census report from November 1998, the Hispanic population of the U.S. was 11.4 percent. www.census.gov/population Teaching respect for the culture and history is a critically important function of the school curriculum; as educators we must insure that our course materials accurately reflect the ethnic diversity America enjoys. This thesis will deliver a comprehensive approach to integrate Latino and Latin American literature, and historical texts into secondary school Spanish courses. The thesis begins with an examination of Latina author, which helps to explain various cultural references. Then the readers will move on to looking at the differences between the history and the cultural identities of North and Latin America. It is this perspective that will greatly enrich the readers' understanding of the contemporary Latin American works of Magical Realism. The study begins by examining a powerful novel by Sandra Cisneros, The House on Mango Street, the book sheds light on the process of assimilation of immigrants and the first generation of Latinos in the U.S. The novel focuses on the experiences of growing up in a hybrid culture which reflects the values, languages, and identities of both mainstream U.S. culture and Latin American culture. Cisneros poignantly articulates the difficulty of establishing one's own identity when confronted with the dualisms of conflicting cultural values. The next section of the thesis provides readers with historical perspectives of the hybrid Spanish-American identity; the study includes historical works starting with the Conquest and continuing through present day which illustrate how the roots of the dualisms in the Spanish-American culture began over 500 years ago. The differences between North American and Latin American history, from the Colonization to contemporary affairs, are explained as a way to help the reader understand why the current paradigms are different. Through the works by Octavia Paz, the Mexican novelist and historian, readers study the genesis of Latin America identity through its history. The last part of the study uses the works of Gabriel García Márquez and Alejo Carpentier to explore Magical Realism. The novelists of this movement share the common goal of writing to continue the search for their identity as it has evolved out of their Indigenous, African, and Spanish roots. Magical Realists help readers to comprehend that the Spanish-Americans have had a changing, growing, hybrid culture ever since the Conquest, both in their countries of origin and communities abroad. These authors have shared that they are writing to give a voice to their search for identity and that the reader should try to understand their perspective and reality in order to best appreciate their works. According to García Márquez, knowing the history of Latin America is of utmost importance in order to understand contemporary literature in a less "abstract" way. Upon winning the Noble Prize in 1982, García Márquez made a profound point in his acceptance speech which illustrates his belief that many readers interpret his works through their own "reality" which strips the literature of its cultural context. He explains that Europeans: "insist on measuring us with the same yardstick with which they measure themselves, without recalling that the ravages of life are not the same for all, and that the search for one's own identity is as arduous and bloody for us as it was for them. To interpret our reality through schemas which are alien to us only has the effect of making us even more unknown, even less free, even more solitary." ("The Solitude") This study will enable educators to integrate the study of culture and history with literature; the approach provides an accurate depiction of the Latin American search for identity and an understanding of Spanish-American "reality." As adolescents struggle with the development of their own identity, they can easily empathize with the Latin American search for identity. Building respect for the growing Latino population in the U.S. can be encouraged by educators who validate the culture group by including works of literature. This thesis is an effort to continue searching for new methods to present the current Spanish-American paradigms in a manner which interests the students and creates appreciation for their diversity.
