Notes
The
purpose
of this
investigation
is
to
discuss
and
delineate
common
issues
and
themes
which
are
apparent
in
contemporary
Latina
literature
of the
United
States
.
I
have
witnessed
, by
way
of
reading
and
comparing
the
works
of
various
twentieth-century
Latina
writers
, a
concentration
of
four
themes
or
issues
in
particular
.
I
have
found
that the
use
and
inclusion
of
themes
such
as
race
,
ethnicity
,
social
class
and
gender
unite
and
bind
Latina
literature
.
My
perspective
is
that
contemporary
Latina
literature
will be
used
as a
window
in
order
for
society
to
view
more
completely
the
ever-growing
Hispanic
population
of the
United
States
. The
intent
of this
work
was to
unify
contemporary
Latina
literature
by
detailing
these
four
reoccurring
themes
as they
surfaced
in a
wide
variety
of
presently
popular
works
of
literature
.
I
have
discovered
that
amid
authors
with
such
widely
varying
backgrounds
, these
unique
issues
resurface
repeatedly
. The
authors
included
represented
Puerto
Rico
,
Mexico
, the
Dominican
Republic
as
well
as
other
geographical
areas
of the
world
.
I
have
explored
works
from
Mexican-American
authors
,
such
as
Montserrat
Fontes
. In
Fontes
'
book
,
Dreams
of the
Centaur
, the
author
highlights
race
and
social
class
issues
in
detailing
the
relationship
between
the
Yaqui
Indian
population
, the
mestizo
people
and what was
considered
to be the
Mexican
and
white
populations
in
Sonora
region
of
Mexico
during
the
time
of
Porfirio
Díaz's
regime
at the
turn
of the
last
century
.
I
also
included
authors
from the
Caribbean
such
as
Cristina
García
, a
Cuban
writer
who
in her
novels
,
Soñar
en
Cubano
and The
Agüero
Sisters
,
offered
profoundly
moving
insight
into the
difficult
questions
concerning
cultural
identity
and
ethnicity
which
affect
her
characters
.
García
also
provided
mesmerizing
detail
which
helped
to
outline
specific
gender
issues
within
the
Hispanic
community
with
particular
attention
to the
position
and
view
of
women
within
society
.
Rosario
Ferré
,
author
of
La
casa
de
la
laguna
,
shared
the
story
of
five
generations
of
two
families
each
with
provocative
histories
. The
events
of the
novel
included
definitive
examples
of the
social
class
structure
of the
Caribbean
island
and
lent
itself
to a
study
in
ethnic
rituals
and their
place
in
mainstream
society
.
Numerous
other
authors
and their
work
were
used
to
support
the
idea
that
race
,
ethnicity
,
social
class
and
gender
are
four
common
themes
which
unite
contemporary
Latina
literature
. If was
necessary
to
take
a
brief
look
at the
progress
of
Latina
literature
,
using
other
works
as
reference
points
, as
it
moved
through
its
course
in
order
to
better
understand
how
Latina
literature
has
become
one
of the
fastest
growing
literary
movements
of
our
times
.
Throughout
time
,
it
is
known
that
women
writers
have not had an
equal
showcasing
of their
talents
in the
area
of
literature
.
Generally
speaking
,
universal
literature
has been
dominated
by
male
authors
thus
proffering
a
very
masculine
point
of
view
of the
world
.
Extensive
work
by
female
authors
has
now
created
more
of an
arena
for
women
authors
,
especially
for
Latina
writers
whose
position
in the
world
of
literature
is
growing
in
visibility
and
popularity
. For
centuries
literature
has
served
as a
tool
for
growing
and
struggling
cultural
groups
which
intend
to
succeed
in
making
the
world
accept
and
understand
their
ever
unique
perspective
of the
world
. This
thesis
has
found
, from the
novel
perspective
of a
women's
point
of
view
, that
race
,
ethnicity
,
social
class
and
gender
are the
four
most
notable
issues
which
unite
Latina
literature
.
