Notes	The author begins by pointing out that Technology Education has evolved from manual arts to shop, industrial arts to its current form. Each change has come with a new philosophy of preparing students for the world of work. In the 1980's, companies began complaining that new employees were lacking skills for the workplace. Several government sponsored initiatives generated reports on workplace skill, including the 1991 Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills [SCANS]. Another trend is that of dwindling support for non-academic programs. Disciplines not directly concerned with reading, writing, and arithmetic are challenged to demonstrate their contributions to student development in an ongoing manner if they are to remain viable in fiscally volatile time. The goal of this project is to address both trends by aligning the Portland Middle School Technology Program with workplace competencies outlined in the SCANS report. In adjusting the Technology Education program to SCANS, students will be exposed to skills necessary for today's workplace, and a new Portland Middle School Technology Education Program will be created.
