Notes
The
purpose
of this
study
was to
generate
hypotheses
regarding
the
impact
that
social
interactions
revolving
around
books
have on an
elementary
students
'
intrinsic
motivation
to
read
across
ability
levels
and
grade
levels
.
Eight
teachers
from
grades
2-5
at a
suburban
New
England
elementary
school
volunteered
to
participate
in this
study
.
One
teacher
at
each
grade
level
agreed
to
increase
their
students
'
social
interactions
around
books
while
the
other
teacher
at that
grade
level
agreed
to
serve
as the
control
group
. The
results
of the
study
include
data
to
support
the
following
five
hypotheses
:
1)
writing
and
reading
connections
are
important
but
perhaps
if
overused
they
can
decrease
students
'
motivation
to
read
2)
a
slow
decline
in
intrinsic
motivation
to
read
does
not
appear
to
occur
as
children
get
older
3)
higher
ability
level
students
appear
to have
higher
intrinsic
motivation
to
read
4)
higher
ability
students
appear
to
engage
in
more
social
interactions
around
books
5)
lower
ability
students
appear
as
though
they will
benefit
the
most
from
social
interactions
around
books
The
study
has
important
implications
that
warrant
further
research
in
order
to
refine
our
understanding
of
children's
intrinsic
motivation
to
read
.
