Title
Situational
correlates
of
overt
aggression
,
relational
aggression
and
prosocial
behavior
among
preschool
children
/
Lisa
Brawley
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University

Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
The
purpose
of this
thesis
was to
examine
the
relationship
between
the
amount
of
teacher
imposed
structure
in
day
care
activities
and the
amount
and
type
of
aggression
and
prosocial
behaviors
that
children
show
. In a
nursery
school
setting
,
20
children
between
three
and
five
years
of
age
were
observed
during
two
structured
activities
:
circle
time
and
art
, and
during
two
unstructured
activities
:
indoor
and
outdoor
free-play
. The
following
behaviors
were
recorded
:
overt
aggression
,
relational
aggression
and
prosocial
behavior
.
It
was
predicted
that
significantly
higher
frequencies
of
aggression
and
prosocial
behaviors
would
occur
in the
two
unstructured
situations
(because
of the
increased
availability
of
interaction
with
other
children)
and
significantly
lower
amounts
of
aggression
and
prosocial
behavior
would
occur
in the
two
structured
situations
. The
correlation
of
day
care
activities
and
children's
behavior
was
analyzed
using
three
repeated
measures
analyses
of
variance
,
one
for
each
behavior
.
All
three
analyses
were
significant
.
Less
aggression
and
prosocial
behaviors
occurred
in the
highly
structured
activity
(circle
time)
compared
with the
unstructured
activities
(free-play)
.
It
was
concluded
that the
amount
of
structure
in a
child
care
setting
is
related
to the
amount
of
aggressive
and
prosocial
behavior
preschool
children
show
.
Implications
for
practices
in
preschool
settings
were
discussed
.
