Title
Residents
and
land
use

'

tourism

Notes
This
thesis
explores
the
differences
between
land
use
commissioner
and
resident
attitudes
toward
tourism
in a
region
that has
experienced
a
shift
in
employment
from
one
primarily
dependent
on
manufacturing
, to
more
diverse
service
sector
employment
. The
new
economy
is
driven
by
heavy
reliance
on
tourism
employment
created
by
two
recently
opened
casinos
.
It
may
be
hypothesized
that
land
use
commission
members
will be
more
hesitant
in
proclaiming
tourism
as an
economic
savior
than the
residents
of
New
London
County
.
Residents
and
land
use
commission
members
were
surveyed
from
New
London
County
,
Connecticut
to
determine
their
attitudes
and
perceptions
toward
tourism
after
the
opening
of
two
large
resort
casinos
following
economic
decline
in a
region
once
dominated
by
manufacturing
.
Results
show
that
residents
may
tend
to
tolerate
negative
by-products
of
tourism
such
as
traffic
and
crowded
beaches
if
it
means
more
employment
and
revenue
for the
economy
.
Land
use
commission
members
tend
to be
more
hesitant
in
embracing
tourism
as the
economic
savior
. The
commissioners
'
attitudes
toward
tourism
appear
to be
more
negatively
oriented
than their
resident
counterparts
and would
rather
see
more
of a
blend
among
employment
sectors
.
