Title
What,
why
,
where
,
when
:
design
,
art
,
time
,
language
and

Master's Thesis
Notes
"
Beauty
is
truth
,
truth
beauty
,
-
that
is
all
Ye
know
on
Earth
, and
all
Ye
need
to
know.
"
John
Keats
, "
Ode
on a
Grecian
Urn
"
Nothing
could
be
so
well
put
to
introduce
the
History
of
Graphic
Design
as this
quote
by
John
Keats
.
Truth
is
the
basis
of
all
ideas
especially
when
forming
a
class
of a
historical
significance
. This
thesis
will
prepare
for the
instruction
of the
course
DES
419
, the '
History
of
Design.
'
Design
419
introduces
the
history
of
Man's
Designs
, and the
theories
,
sociology
,
psychology
and
philosophy
of those
designs
. This
is
the
history
of
Design
, and the
History
of "
Man;
" the
development
of his
creations
from
art
to
tools
to
machines
and the
newer
concepts
of
technology
and
beyond
.
One
must
remember
that
Art
is
the
continuing
use
of
Design
and
Aesthetics
.
Art
is
the
oldest
, and
only
continuous
,
recorded
History
of
Man
, and his
designs
.
Language
is
universally
observable
.
Written
languages
are
beautiful
and
informative
, but
only
Design
and
Art
can
be
used
as the
Universal
Communication
of
ideas
,
feelings
and are
visual
.
Jamake
Highwater
states
in his '
Primal
Mind,
' "
Languages
aren't
different
words
for the
same
thing
,
languages
are
different
words
for
entirely
different
ways
of
seeing
and
conceptualizing
the
world
. The
words
we
use
largely
determine
how
we
perceive
the
world
, but the
words
we
use
also
determine
how
we
perceive
each
other
.
Words
are
powerful
, but
images
can
be
Devastating.
" The
premise
of this
thesis
is
based
on the
intelligences
of,
mind
,
sight
,
knowledge
and the
idea
that
one
can
learn
to
look
at
Design
and
Art
in an
organized
and
intelligent
mind-building
way
.
I
will
encompass
aspects
presented
by
Dr.'s
David
Perkins
,
Howard
Gardner
, from
Harvard
,
Rudolf
Arnheim
, from the
University
of
California
, and
other
leaders
in the
field
of
Intelligence
and the
visible
observations
of
Design
,
Art
and
Aesthetics
. From '
Gaps
and
Traps,
' to
invisible
challenges
,
we
will '
build
the
mind,
'
through
Design
and
Art
to
become
aware
of what
is
good
Design
and what
is
average
or
bad
graffiti
.
Design
is
the
visual
of
Aesthetics
. The
Art
form
that
makes
you
want
to
observe
,
stop
,
think
and
reflect
,
copy
,
wear
,
build
and
need
.
However
,
most
of
all
,
Design
,
good
Design
,
makes
you
Remember
! The
Design
of
who
,
why
,
where
,
when
and how was this
done
,
redone
and
done
again
;
traps
us
Visibly
,
Intellectually
,
Emotionally
and
Aesthetically
.
Lectures
will
begin
with
learning
to
observe
with
organized
concepts
of
looking
and
seeing
,
using
time
,
clarity
and
depth
,
(on
a
broad
,
yet
very
adventurous
scope)
, at
Design
and
Aesthetics
with
art
and the
art
of
intelligence
. By
using
the '
Intelligent
Eye,
'
we
can
and will
challenge
the
invisible
aspects
of 'what
is
not there
is
really
there.
' What are those '
Knowledge
Gaps
and
Intelligence
Traps
'
Dr
.
Perkins
describes
in the
visual
aspects
of his '
Mind
Building
Through
Art.
' How
do
I
look
or
create
so
the
mind
sees
what
I
wanted
you
to
see
, but
didn't
have to
display
to
trap
your
invisible
need
or
acceptance
to an
idea
or
object
; the
ultimate
in
Graphic
Design
. To
begin
I
will
semantically
define
the
classes
of "
thinking
"
used
in
regards
to this
piece
(delving
into the
Aristotelian
Theory
"
use
of
intellect
" and
concepts
of
epistemology)
; that
Conception
,
Creation
and
Communication
, are the
key
words
used
in the
making
of
Aesthetic
Design
and
Art
,
(whether
it
is
Fine
Arts
, the
Performing
Arts
, or
Writing)
.
ThinkWrites
are the
catalyst
for
understanding
, by the
learner
,
encompassing
homeostatic
concepts
of
defining
and
relating
what the
three
"
C's
, "
(concepts
,
creation
and
communication)
,
mean
to them.
Starting
with
introductions
into that
Knowledgeable
Mind
Building
,
we
start
with
semantics
of "What,
Why
,
Where
,
When
and
Who
started
all
this.
"
Design
,
Art
,
Time
,
Language
and
Symbols
; how
did
it
all
begin
?
Where
was
design
started
? What
is
it
?
Why
am
I
here
anyway
, and
who
is
Ludwig
Wittgenstein
, and what
is
a '
Duck-Rabbit,
' and what
does
it
mean
, and
why
was
it
done
anyway
?
