Notes	This project is the first systematic attempt in developing a Geographic Information System (GIS) for applications for city parks in New Haven. Edgewood Park and West River Memorial Park have been chosen for the study. But the framework established allows easy extension to other parks. The first objective of this study was to investigate data availability for GIS applications in urban parks in New Haven. It was found that data of major roads, streets, hydrology and soil, available on the web, are useful for the GIS application. Land use coverage from satellite imagery is of little utility because of its low spatial resolution. Major investment is required to generate the land use by digitizing aerial photos. A few significant data limitations have been identified (small hiking trails, power lines, water lines, public arts, outdoor facilities, wildlife habitat classification and endangered plant species) and should be considered in the future development effort. The second objective of this project was to develop a graphic user interface within the PC windows environment to facilitate the application for the park staff who are not familiar with the GIS software. The custom-design has been made with Avenue scripts. The views generated by the system can be printed as hard copy maps. The program structure can be used for other park's databases. The final objective was to demonstrate how the GIS may be used in helping to address multi-objective land use and planning issues facing the Park Department. A conflict zone map has been created using buffer and map overlay analysis to guide the zoning and planning efforts for protection of environmentally sensitive natural resources (wetland, water bodies, rivers).
