Notes	The techniques of art may have developed by accident, however the growth of the profession has been quite deliberate. Many individuals who enter counseling, struggle with the placement of feelings into words. Therefore, the use of art therapy techniques to facilitate expression seems only natural. The objective of this study was to gain insight and understanding into the world of art therapy, as well as to determine it's efficacy as a viable treatment modality. This study attempted to ascertain how art therapy is used to enhance the effectiveness of traditional psychotherapy and counseling methods. More specifically, the research explored the use of art therapy with post traumatic stress disorder and sexual abuse. This paper presented a review of the history of art therapy, examined theories used in the field and specific uses of art therapy. Also, present day applications of art therapy with PTSD were summarized as found in the empirical research literature. Research has demonstrated that art therapy is an effective way to elicit self-expression in the counseling forum. The research findings demonstrated that art therapy can assist individuals with personal growth and self development, and is a viable technique to use in counseling. The literature revealed that art therapy was considered to be a valuable healing tool in the counseling forum of today, specifically with PTSD and sexual abuse cases. Art therapy techniques can be an essential intervention tool used by counselors to elicit the growth and healing of their consumers.
