Notes
Supported
Living
Arrangements
(SLAs)
are
residential
programs
designed
to
facilitate
the
integration
of
developmentally
disabled
individuals
into the
community
.
Clients
of these
programs
live
in
independent
apartments
and
receive
approximately
twenty
hours
per
week
of
staff
support
and
counseling
in
order
to
learn
and
practice
the
skills
needed
to
live
in a
non
institutional
setting
. The
goal
of the
SLAs
is
to
increase
the
clients
'
level
of
independence
by
(1)
developing
their
daily
skills
,
(2)
increasing
their
interaction
with
individuals
and
agencies
in the
community
, and
(3)
decreasing
the
amount
of
staff
supervision
provided
by the
programs
. This
retrospective
study
investigates
the
effect
of
SLAs
on the
clients
'
level
of
independence
as
measured
by
scores
on
five
indices
: an
Independent
Living
Skills
(ILS)
assessment
,
vocational
training
evaluations
,
teaching
program
evaluations
, the
number
of
incident
reports
filed
, and the
number
of
staff
hours
per
week
allotted
to
each
resident
.
Scores
on these
variables
,
collected
every
six
months
, were
compared
over
a
four
year
time
period
: the
two
year
period
after
clients
entered
the
SLAs
versus
the
two
years
prior
to
admission
,
when
clients
resided
in
group
homes
. The
data
was
obtained
from the
existing
records
of
fourteen
SLA
residents
living
in
one
region
of the
Connecticut
Department
of
Mental
Retardation
.
No
significant
differences
were
found
between
the
pre-SLA
and
post-SLA
periods
on
four
of the
five
indices
(ILS
,
vocational
programs
,
teaching
programs
, and
incident
reports)
. For
staff
hours
, there was a
significant
decrease
in the
number
of
hours
from
pre-
to
post-SLA
conditions
.
While
much
of this
drop
reflects
a
change
from
24
hour
to
part-time
staff
coverage
, there was an
additional
significant
decline
in
hours
from the
first
to
later
SLA
periods
.
Factors
which
may
have
limited
the
study
are
discussed
and
possible
explanation
for the
results
are
explored
.
