Title
Comparative
analysis
of the
benthic
infauna
and
sediment
for
two
small
estuaries
in
Connecticut

Notes
Estuaries
are
rich
in
nutrients
,
such
as
nitrogen
which
may
limit
plant
growth
in
coastal
water
bodies
.
Organic
enrichment
caused
by
allochthonous
inputs
of
nitrogen
has been
shown
to have
adverse
affects
on
water
quality
in
estuaries
.
When
estuaries
are
under
pressure
from
cultural
eutrophication
,
opportunistic
species
of
benthic
infauna
can
be
found
.
Therefore
,
knowledge
of the
benthic
infauna
could
be
useful
in
establishing
baseline
assessments
regarding
water
quality
in
estuaries
. The
lower
portions
of the
Lieutenant
and
Black
Hall
Rivers
are
small
estuaries
located
in
Old
Lyme
,
Connecticut
. A
baseline
assessment
of the
macroinfaunal
assemblages
and the
physical
sediment
characteristics
was
conducted
within
these
estuaries
.
Five
stations
in the
Black
Hall
River
and
six
stations
in the
Lieutenant
River
were
sampled
in
September
1996
. A
total
of
24
taxa
and
3024
individuals
were
identified
from
132
cores
.
Annelids
were the
dominant
taxon
found
in
both
estuaries
,
isopods
ranked
second
and
amphipods
ranked
third
in
total
number
of
individuals
.
One-way
analysis
of
variance
revealed
that the
abundance
of
benthic
infauna
in the
Black
Hall
River
was
significantly
different
from that in the
Lieutenant
River
.
Diversity
,
richness
and
evenness
indices
were
different
for
both
estuaries
.
Margalef
(R1)
and
Menhinick
(R2)
mean
richness
indices
on the
Black
Hall
River
were
R1=1.34
and
R2=0.26
,
respectively
. The
mean
Shannon-Weiner
diversity
value
for the
Black
Hall
River
was
H'=4.83
. The
Black
Hall
River
Pielou
mean
evenness
index
value
was
J'=
0.75
. On the
Lieutenant
River
, the
Margalef
(R1)
and
Menhinick
(R2)
indices
were
R1=1.00
and
R2=0.24
. The
mean
Shannon-Weiner
index
for the
Lieutenant
River
was
H'=4.33
. The
Pielou
evenness
value
was
J'=0.79
.
Variation
in
species
composition
between
estuaries
reflected
different
environmental
conditions
.
Fauna
at
sites
with
larger
grained
sediment
with
higher
water
flow
and
erosion
were
characterized
by
lower
richness
and
evenness
values
.
Stations
richer
in
organic
material
and
smaller
grained
sediment
with
reducing
conditions
had
fewer
species
present
.
Stations
having
medium-grained
sediment
and
lower
organic
content
had a
greater
number
of
species
. In
addition
to
sediment
characteristics
and
water
currents
,
other
factors
may
have
contributed
to the
diversity
of the
macroinfaunal
assemblages
.
