Notes
This
study
compared
the
self
perception
and
ideal
mate
perception
of
Taiwanese
and
American
college
students
.
It
was
hypothesized
that in
both
cultures
,
men
would be
predisposed
to
prefer
marriage
partners
with
traits
that
enhance
their
reproductive
value
(traits
such
as
good
looks
,
youth)
,
whereas
women
would be
predisposed
to
prefer
traits
that
signal
men's
potential
for
resource
acquisition
(traits
such
as
intelligence
,
ambition
,
potential
for
success
:
money
,
status
, and
position)
.
It
was also
hypothesized
that
overall
women
would be
more
choosy
or
selective
than would
men
in
selecting
marriage
partners
.
Regarding
culture
differences
,
it
was
predicted
that
culture
would have a
significant
impact
on
men's
and
women's
marriage
partner
preferences
.
Specifically
,
it
was
hypothesized
that
traditional
gender
differences
would be
weaker
in
America
, and that
American
college
students
would
hold
less
gender
stereotyped
attitudes
and
thus
would
choose
differently
from
Taiwanese
college
students
. The
original
sample
included
118
Taiwanese
and
115
Americans
. The
instruments
utilized
in this
study
included
the
Traits
Desired
in a
Partner
Questionnaire
and
Gender
Stereotype
Questionnaire
.
Demographic
data
were also
collected
.
Results
supported
many
of
our
hypotheses
.
However
, the
hypothesis
which
proposed
that
traditional
gender
differences
would be
weaker
in
America
was not
supported
.
Taiwanese
men
rated
the
traits
physically
attractive
as
more
important
than
did
women
. This
difference
was not
qualified
in the
U.S
.
sample
.
Men
in
both
cultures
cared
more
about
youth
than
did
women
.
Four
traits
which
were
considered
to be
traditionally
desired
more
by
women
were
examined
and
all
failed
to
reach
significance
(i.e
.
ambitious
;
money
,
status
, and
position
;
potential
for
success
;
intelligence)
. In
fact
, the
results
showed
that
both
men
and
women
rated
intelligence
as the
most
important
trait
when
choosing
a
romantic
partner
across
cultures
.
