Title
The
relationship
between
high
levels
of
stressful
experiences
,
coping
strategies
and
cancer

Publisher

Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
This
study
investigated
psychological
and
personality
factors
related
to the
onset
of
cancer
.
Stressful
life
events
and
coping
strategies
were
investigated
in a
retrospective
study
of
69
cancer
patients
from
local
support
groups
and their
controls
. The
first
hypothesis
measured
participants
stress
during
the
past
two
years
prior
to
diagnosis
for the
cancer
group
, and
two
years
prior
to
filling
out
the
survey
for the
control
group
.
Using
a
MANOVA
, the
findings
indicated
that there were
no
significant
differences
between
cancer
and
non
cancer
groups
as
examined
by the
Social
Readjustment
Rating
Scale
(SRRS)
, than
did
the
control
group
. The
second
hypothesis
measured
the
effects
of
Adaptive
and
Maladaptive
coping
related
to the
onset
of
cancer
, as
examined
by the
COPE
scale
. Also
using
a
MANOVA
, the
findings
indicated
that there were
no
significant
differences
between
cancer
and
non
cancer
groups
. In
addition
, a
logistic
regression
was
conducted
to
determine
how
well
the
model
was
used
to
predict
cancer
and
non
cancer
status
.
Overall
, the
model
predicted
both
cancer
membership
and
non
cancer
membership
62.02%
of the
time
.
Some
interesting
incidental
findings
showed
that
females
had a
significantly
higher
stress
score
and
maladaptive
cope
score
than
males
did
.
Although
the
findings
of this
study
suggests
that
psychological
factors
,
such
as
stress
and
coping
strategies
were not
significant
factors
in
predicting
cancer
,
one
needs
to
consider
the
retrospective
aspect
of the
study
and
participants
'
memories
and
current
state
of
mind
.
