Notes
The
following
is
an
abstract
of
research
conducted
while
writing
a
thesis
entitled
"
Another
Mask
of
Mexico
and Its
People
Through
Jorge
Ibargüengoitia's
Satirical
Prose.
"
Some
authors
believe
the
only
purpose
of
satirical
writing
is
to
amuse
the
reader
without
accomplishing
anything
else
.
Throughout
my
research
I
attempt
to
show
that
both
satire
and
humor
are
important
factors
in the
creation
of
narrative
literature
, and as
such
, are
worthy
of
analysis
to
give
them the
merit
they
deserve
in
literature
.
Many
writers
have
used
both
satire
and
humor
in their
creative
writing
. In
almost
all
cases
, they
use
social
and
political
events
to
show
the
failures
and
mistakes
a
social
group
falls
in to "
make
" its
social
order
work
. By
presenting
such
failures
through
satire
,
authors
are not
attempting
to
amuse
readers
, but
rather
to
invite
them to
consider
the
many
problems
in their
society
. There
is
a
fine
line
between
satire
and
humor
and to
draw
that
line
with
mastery
is
a
task
very
few
accomplish
.
Jorge
Ibargüengoitia
,
thanks
to the
fascination
he had for
Mexico
and its
people
,
succeeded
in
defining
the
Mexican
personality
, its
contradictions
,
humor
and
irony
. In
my
thesis
,
I
chose
six
novels
representing
the
various
ways
the
author
,
using
different
shades
of
irony
,
portrayed
Mexican
behavior
and
history
. The
thesis
development
is
as
follows
:
Chapter
I
establishes
a
historical
background
;
gives
an
overview
of the
use
of
irony
as an
element
of
Mexican
literature
and how
irony
evolved
from
colonial
times
to the
present
.
Chapter
II
presents
Jorge
Ibargüengoitia's
biography
.
Chapter
III
analyzes
the
way
the
author
utilized
reality
and
fiction
in
Los
Relámpagos
de
Agosto
,
based
upon
the
memoirs
of a
soldier
during
the
Mexican
revolution
. By
mixing
reality
and
fiction
, the
plot
of this
novel
is
neither
truly
accurate
nor
truly
historical
. The
importance
of
irony
in this
novel
resides
in how the
author
,
through
the
written
word
,
demystifies
a
solemn
event
in the
Mexican
history
. In
Chapter
IV
, the
author
, by
again
taking
a
historical
event
in
Maten
al
León
,
portrays
the
diverse
personalities
existing
in
Mexican
society
. The
irony
is
how the
author
confronts
those
diversities
and
makes
the
characters
allies
, in
order
to
overthrow
their
government
.
Chapter
V
focuses
on how
Jorge
Ibargüengoitia
in
Estas
Ruínas
que
Ves
observes
the
behavior
of those
around
him. His
writing
rescues
actions
from
banality
, the
apparently
insignificant
,
daily
occurrences
owing
to a
peculiar
propension
for
solemnity
,
transcendency
and the
basic
conservative
nature
of the
Mexican
society
.
Chapter
VI
is
based
on a
true
story
. The
author
recreates
the
drama
of
many
prostitutes
who
were
killed
by the
madames
they
worked
for. The
author
investigated
and
compared
the
original
court
records
which
were as
confusing
as the
newspaper's
coverage
and then
set
forth
upon
the
adventure
of
creating
Las
Muertas
.
Jorge
Ibargüengoitia
transports
the
reader
to an
underworld
of
murders
,
white
slavery
,
exploitation
,
punishment
and
deaths
,
causing
the
reader
to
feel
that he
is
witnessing
the
best
and
lightest
of the
farces
.
Chapter
VII
has been
written
by
following
the
detective
story's
patterns
,
Dos
Crímenes
portrays
how
elements
of
instability
and
innocence
in
satire
carry
the
plot
in
uncontrollable
directions
. In the
end
,
it
is
the
characters
who
rescue
the
author
from any
preconceived
notions
and
happily
tone
down
his
detective
project
. In
Chapter
VIII
Jorge
Ibargüengoitia's
irony
in
Los
Pasos
de
López
,
succeeds
in
presenting
another
viewpoint
on the
Mexican
movement
of
independence
, a
viewpoint
seldom
mentioned
. The
author
restores
life
to the
national
heroes
,
making
the
reader
see
them as
beings
of
flesh
and
blood
. To
do
this, the
vocabulary
of
each
character
in the
novel
is
as
simple
as that of a
common
Mexican
. The
author
presents
situations
portraying
the
characters
as
earthy
beings
,
fallible
,
capable
of
loving
and
hating
,
presenting
the
two
faces
of
history
, the
one
the
text
books
talk
about
, and the
other
few
historic
records
have
registered
. His
literary
style
is
an
effective
use
of
satire
in
both
literature
as
well
as in
Mexican
history
.
Conclusions
.
It
is
almost
impossible
for
human
beings
to
face
up
to
reality
and
recognize
their
own
qualities
and
shortcomings
when
looking
at
themselves
in a
mirror
that
reflects
the
cruel
truth
.
Ibargüengoitia
takes
that
imaginary
mirror
,
breaks
it
, and then
calmly
puts
it
back
together
again
,
recreating
its
reality
according
to his
own
criteria
through
his
works
. A
Mexican
can
read
Ibargüengoitia's
works
and
sense
that
either
his
own
personality
is
being
portrayed
through
the
narrative
or
feel
that a
close
friend
is
relating
personal
anecdotes
to him.
It
is
obvious
that
Ibargüengoitia
did
not
seek
the
path
of
glorification
through
his
writing
, but
rather
,
through
his
satirical
prose
he
sought
to
expose
his
very
personal
and
incisive
view
point
.
It
is
without
question
that
Jorge
Ibargüengoitia
made
a
significant
contribution
to the
literary
world
with his
Mexican
satirical
pen
.
