academic
development
for
all
students
, but are
particularly
important
in
facilitating
achievement
gains
for
populations
from
diverse
racial

ethnic

socioeconomic
backgrounds
. This
quantitative
study
examines
the
context
of
learning
in
urban
elementary
classrooms
through
the
lens
of the
CLassroom
Assessment
Scoring
System
(CLASS)
and
investigates
the
relationships
between
dimensions
of
classroom
climate
, as
measured
by the
CLASS
, and
student
achievement
as
measured
by the
Connecticut
Mastery
Test
(CMT)
and
other
high
stakes
reading
tests
.
Additionally
,
CLASS
data
are
compared
to
students’
responses
to
questions
about
their
classroom
experiences
.
Findings
are
discussed
in
light
of their
implications
for
school
leaders
and
professional
practice
.
