Title
The
integration
of
mathematics
and
art
:
teaching
geometry
through
the
works
of
M.C
.

Notes
The
integration
of
discovery-based
learning
activities
into
mathematics
curricula
has been
shown
to
aid
in
students’
conceptual
understanding
of
many
topics
,
especially
in the
subject
of
geometry
.
Using
artwork
as the
basis
of
discovery
lessons
in
geometry
is
an
interdisciplinary
approach
that
may
pique
students’
interests
,
helping
to
deepen
their
involvement
in the
lesson
. Also, the
use
of
group
work
during
the
lessons
encourages
students
to
become
independent
thinkers
,
learners
and
workers
. A
series
of
twelve
discovery
lessons
were
developed
for
integration
into the
high
school
geometry
curriculum
,
centering
on the
artwork
of
M.C
.
Escher
.
Before
the
lessons
were
used
,
all
students
were
administered
a
pre-test
to
assess
their
prior
knowledge
of the
topics
to be
covered
.
Research
was
carried
out
with
two
groups
of
students
,
one
working
with the
discovery
lessons
and
one
not,
utilizing
four
of these
lessons
on
quadrilaterals
as the
daily
lesson
opener
.
Upon
the
culmination
of the
unit
,
students
were
given
a
summative
assessment
to
test
their
current
knowledge
. The
results
from the
two
groups
were
compared
to
try
to
find
out
if the
lessons
aided
in
students’
conceptual
understanding
of the
geometrical
concepts
.
While
the
test
results
showed
slightly
greater
improvement
in the
experimental
group’s
mean
scores
, there was not a
significant
difference
in the
two
groups’
mean
scores
. The
results
of these
tests
helped
this
researcher
determine
if the
integration
of
discovery
based
Escher
lessons
supported
student
learning
and
understanding
.
