Dragonfly
and
damselfly
(Odonata)
species
are
known
to
vary
in
abundance
due
to
location
. These
variations
are
hypothesized
to
result
from
habitat
differences
in
plant
species
available
for
landing
(Abbott
,
2001)
. This
study
will
answer
, in
part
,
whether
plant
selection
for
landing
preferences
varies
among
Odonata
species
.
Additionally
, an
important
question
relevant
to
understanding
the
ecology
of
Odonata
and their
conservation
is
how
effectively
current
collection
methods
sample
species
richness
and
relative
abundance
in a
variety
of
habitats
. This
study
will
answer
how
different
sampling
regimes
performed
at
sampling
species
richness
in
different
habitats
.
Air
net
collections
were
gathered
through
the
months
of
June
to
August
.
Species
richness
curves
were
generated
comparing
habitat
,
plant
landing
site
and
expert
versus
non-expert
collector
using
the
Estimates
Programs
(Estimates)
. In
addition
plant
landing
sites
were
compared
to
plant
abundance
to
see
if a
correlation
was
observed
. The
data
indicates
that
non-expert
collectors
are
better
at
finding
both
“rare”
(unique
species
to the
data
set)
species
and
total
species
richness
than
experts
. The
data
suggest
that
lakes
are the
most
productive
habitat
for
Odonata
collecting
and that as
effort
and
individual
samples
increase
,
species
richness
will
increase
. In
species
richness
curves
,
lack
of an
asymptote
in
individual
effort
suggests
that
more
samples
are
required
to
see
total
species
richness
, but
uniques
showed
evidence
of
leveling-off
in
10
days
, at
which
point
15
rare
species
were
collected
among
approximately
400
individual
Odonates
. There was
no
correlation
between
landing
plant
and
species
.
