Notes
The
purpose
of this
study
was to
determine
if
classical
music
impacts
student
learning
. The
goal
was to
find
out
if
students
who
listen
to
classical
music
in the
background
would
perform
better
on a
written
test
compared
with a
group
who
did
not
listen
to
classical
music
in the
background
.
Participants
included
6th
and
8th
grade
Health
students
in an
urban
setting
in
Connecticut
. There were
special
education
students
, as
well
as
regular
health
education
students
in the
classes
. They were
randomly
assigned
to
two
groups
in
each
grade
level
.
One
group
listened
to
classical
music
in the
background
and the
other
had
no
music
playing
in the
background
during
a
reproductive
system/puberty
unit
lasting
for
8
classes
. The
instruments
that were
used
in this
study
were a
pre-assessment
and a
post-assessment
consisting
of
reproductive
system/puberty
questions
. The
independent
variable
was the
two
groups
; the
control
group
and the
group
listening
to the
classical
music
. The
dependent
variable
was
student
learning
. The
total
score
on the
post-assessment
was
compared
among
the
experimental
and the
control
group
. The
pre-assessment
was also
compared
with the
post-assessment
to
see
if there were any
significant
differences
among
the
groups
. Also,
males
and
females
were
compared
to
each
other
to
determine
if there were any
significant
differences
in
test
scores
. At the
end
of the
unit
,
students
were also
asked
a
question
about
how they
felt
about
classical
music
being
played
in the
background
, for
qualitative
data
analysis
. There was
significant
difference
found
when
music
played
in the
background
.
Students
who
had
no
music
playing
in the
background
did
significantly
better
than those
who
did
have
music
playing
in the
background
,
regardless
of
grade
level
. There was
no
significant
difference
found
between
male
and
female
with
regard
to their
pre-to-post
scores
.
Eighty
percent
of the
students
said
that the
classical
music
did
not
bother
them.
Forty
percent
indicated
,
“…I
didn’t
notice
it”
Only
20%
said
,
“...it
helped
me
to
calm
down
and
stay
focused.”
In
conclusion
, the
results
were
unexpected
,
regarding
classical
music
not
having
a
positive
effect
.
However
, the
qualitative
results
did
show
some
positive
qualities
about
listening
to
classical
music
.
Classical
music
does
not
indicate
improved
test
scores
,
however
the
classroom
climate
did
appear
to be
more
serene
.
Students
were not
bothered
by
having
the
classical
music
left
playing
even
after
the
testing
was
completed
. For
future
research
, the
experimental
design
could
remain
,
however
increasing
the
sample
size
and
including
multiple
middle
school
districts
would be
warranted
. Also, the
time
period
that the
research
took
place
could
be
significantly
longer
