Title

criminal
thinking
patterns
among
religious
non-offenders
Publisher

Date

Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
The
purpose
of this
study
was to
examine
the
relationship
between
criminal
thinking
and
religiosity
(beliefs
and
behaviors)
of
non-offenders
.
Parishioners
were
recruited
from a
United
Methodist
Church
in an
urban
area
of
Hartford
,
Connecticut
. The
sample
consisted
of
90
parishioners
who
read
an
informed
consent
statement
and then
completed
three
additional
questionnaires
. The
Spiritual
Involvement
and
Beliefs
Scale
(SIBS)
measures
religious
beliefs
and
practices
;
Criminogenic
Thinking
Profile
(CTP)
measures
attitudes
related
to
criminal
behavior
; and the
Religious
Behavior
Scale
(RBS)
measures
behavioral
actions
related
to
religious
practices
.
Parishioner
CTP
scores
were
compared
to
previously
collected
CTP
scores
on
undergraduate
students
and
probationers
. The
pattern
of
results
that
emerged
from
comparisons
between
parishioners
,
undergraduate
students
, and
probationers
revealed
that
parishioners
had a
consistently
lower
level
of
criminal
thinking
.
However
, the
differences
appeared
minimal
.
Correlational
analyses
between
the
SIBS
,
RBS
and the
CTP
were
conducted
. The
correlational
results
suggest
no
relationship
between
criminal
thinking
and
self-report
measures
of
religious
belief
and
behavior
.
