police
stress
in

Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
The
purpose
of this
study
was to
compare
the
stress
felt
by
officers
employed
by
different
size
departments
to
identify
differences
and
similarities
between
small
town
and
urban
policing
. This
study
surveyed
104
officers
of
various
ranks
from
four
local
Connecticut
police
departments
which
represented
and
served
three
different
size
communities
(small
,
medium
, and
large)
.
Officers
were
asked
to
complete
a
five
page
survey
which
gathered
basic
demographic
information
and
asked
them to
rate
the
amount
of
stress
felt
in
certain
situations
common
in
policing
.
Officers
generally
reported
low
levels
of
stress
, with
task-related
and
organizational
stressors
rated
slightly
more
stressful
overall
than
external
stressors
. In
regard
to
department
size
,
officers
from the
mid-size
department
reported
significantly
higher
stress
, on
average
,
due
to
organizational
factors
than
officers
from the
small
departments
. There were also
marginally
significant
differences
between
small
and
large
departments
in
regard
to
organizational
factors
, as
well
as
between
small
and
medium
departments
in
regard
to
task-related
stressors
.
Officers
were also
asked
about
the
effect
this
stress
has had on their
lives
outside
of
work
. A
majority
of
officers
reported
that their
relationships
with
friends
,
amount
of
sleep
and
eating
habits
had
worsened
since
becoming
a
police
officer
. The
only
difference
as a
function
of
department
size
was that
officers
from
large
departments
were
significantly
more
likely
to
report
that their
amount
of
exercise
had
decreased
since
becoming
an
officer
.
