Notes
The
written
work
of
high
school
Spanish
II
and
Spanish
III
students
is
characterized
by and
suffers
from
frequent
miscues
, or
errors
.
When
selected
miscues
are
identified
,
re-taught
and
revisited
, the
result
may
be
improved
application
of
correct
forms
in
subsequent
written
assignments
. A
review
of the
literature
indicates
there
is
evidence
to
support
the
use
of
miscue
analysis
, a
technique
used
to
better
understand
errors
in
reading
and to
improve
the
skills
of
struggling
readers
. The
connections
between
reading
and
writing
skills
provide
the
basis
for
using
a
reading-improvement
strategy
with
written
work
.
Miscue
analysis
brings
written
errors
into
sharper
focus
by
observing
and
tracking
students‟
work
.
It
can
be
helpful
in
identifying
:
a)
frequently
committed
errors
,
b)
the
context
in
which
written
errors
commonly
appear
, and
c)
how
re-examining
the
errors
impacts
students‟
performance
.
Miscue
Analysis
in
Spanish
II
and
Spanish
III
examines
six
specific
miscues
that
students
in
Spanish
II
and
Spanish
III
classes
made
in their
written
work
during
the
2008-2009
school
year
. The
six
chosen
miscues
were
among
the
most
glaring
mistakes
made
in these
levels
of
Spanish
.
Miscue
data
was
collected
from
assigned
tasks
in
three
categories
:
1)
periodic
compositions
,
2)
homework
assignments
, and
3)
dictations
.
Students‟
written
work
either
provided
evidence
of
general
understanding
re
: a
particular
concept
, or
evidence
of
misunderstanding/no
comprehension
of a
topic
.
Analyzing
the
miscues
and
re-examining
the
core
concepts
associated
with the
miscues
was the
strategy
used
in this
study
to
improve
and
eliminate
these
errors
.
