Notes
Music
can
be
used
as a
motivational
tool
to
increase
levels
of
physical
activity
. The
study
was
designed
to
determine
the
differences
in
physical
activity
levels
of
physical
education
students
when
participating
in
lessons
with and
without
motivational
music
. The
goal
was to
determine
if
motivational
music
increases
students’
activity
levels
.
Participants
in this
study
were
male
and
female
second
grade
students
.
During
the
warm-up
participants
ran
around
the
track
for
3
minutes
.
Participants
then
played
the
game
“Clean
up
the
Messy
Backyard.”
This was a
continuous
game
where
students
are
constantly
picking
up
balls
and
throwing
them
over
the
fence
onto the
other
team’s
backyard
. The
goal
was for
each
team
to
keep
their
backyard
clean
by
removing
as
many
balls
as
possible
. This
lesson
format
was the
same
for the
two
groups
of
students
participating
in this
study
. The
only
difference
was that
one
group
of
students
had
music
playing
during
the
warm-up
and
activity
while
the
other
group
did
not have any
music
playing
.
Activity
levels
were
measured
using
three
instruments
:
pedometers
,
questionnaires
, and a
video
analysis
.
Pedometers
were
used
to
determine
the
number
of
steps
taken
by
students
which
indicates
their
level
of
activity
. The
questionnaires
were
designed
to
assess
how
students’
bodies
feel
before
,
during
, and
after
physical
activity
. These
responses
represented
individual
,
modified
rating
of
perceived
exertion
(RPE)
scores
. The
researcher
videotaped
,
reviewed
, and
analyzed
each
lesson
focusing
on
student
enjoyment
and
behavior
during
the
warm-up
and
activity
.
Four
statistical
analyses
were
run
to
examine
differences
among
those
classes
taught
with
music
and those
taught
without
music
with
respect
to
pedometer
scores
and a
modified
rate
of
perceived
exertion
(RPE)
. A
significant
difference
was
found
in the
pedometer
scores
of
students
taught
with
music
when
compared
to those
taught
without
music
.
No
significant
differences
were
found
when
examining
the
modified
RPE
scores
during
warm-up
and
game
activity
among
the
music
and
no
music
groups
. The
findings
of the
current
study
further
validate
the
results
that
motivational
music
can
have an
effect
and
increase
the
physical
activity
levels
of
students
.
Physical
education
teachers
can
use
this
research
to
incorporate
motivational
music
into their
teaching
and
curriculum
.
Motivational
music
can
be
one
tool
used
to
encourage
students
to be
more
active
. In
conclusion
,
male
and
female
second
grade
students
can
be
motivated
by
music
to
increase
their
physical
activity
levels
.
Future
research
is
needed
to
explore
what
motivates
young
children
to be
physically
active
and
increase
their
activity
levels
.
