Notes
Statistics
show
that
drunk
driving
is
a
significant
problem
in the
United
States
. The
purpose
of this
study
was to
assess
the
recidivism
rate
of
DUI/DWI
offenders
who
have been
placed
on
probation
for an
earlier
DUI/DWI
conviction
. This
study
looked
at those
factors
that
contribute
to
recidivism
among
this
population
such
as
age
,
gender
,
race
,
demographics
and the
number
of
prior
arrests
. The
study
employed
a
secondary
analysis
of
data
and the
sample
consisted
of
505
DUI/DWI
offenders
who
were on
probation
in the
State
of
Connecticut
. Of the
505
probationers
,
6%
received
a
probation
violation
in the
first
six
months
of their
probation
sentence
. The
only
demographic
factor
related
to
violations
was
employment
status
;
probationers
with
long
periods
of
unemployment
were
most
likely
to
receive
a
probation
violation
.
Gender
,
race
, and
amount
of
education
were not
related
to
recidivism
yet
prior
substance
abuse
treatment
was
related
to
recidivism
.
Probationers
who
had been in
treatment
five
or
more
times
were
likely
to
receive
a
probation
violation
.
Last
,
prior
failure
to
appear
charges
for not
showing
up
for
court
and
high
Level
of
Service
Inventory
(revised)
risk
assessment
scores
were
most
correlated
with
probation
violations
. This
study
found
that
DUI/DWI
offenders
who
recidivated
in the
first
six
months
of their
probation
were
more
often
unemployed
, had
several
stays
in
substance
abuse
treatment
, had
already
missed
court
dates
, and had an
array
social/personal
needs
. These
findings
support
other
research
on
DUI/DWI
offenders
that
recommend
a
blended
version
of
supervision
and
treatment
. Also,
more
consideration
should be
given
for a
variety
of
treatment
for
high
needs
offenders
.
Rather
than
simply
refer
DUI/DWI
offenders
to
outpatient
treatment
,
judges
and
probation
officers
should
consider
conducting
more
thorough
risk
assessments
at the
beginning
of
offenders’
probation
sentence
and
place
probationers
in
more
needs-specific
treatment
.
