Title
Mediation
of the
gender/volunteer
behavior
relationship
by
values
motives
Publisher

Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
Volunteer
work
and
factors
that
influence
the
choice
to
participate
in
volunteer
work
has
become
a
focus
of
study
in
psychology
.
Examples
of
volunteer
work
that
occur
in or
through
an
organization
are
coaching
a
little
league
baseball
team
and
mentoring
. An
important
question
is
who
volunteers
and
why
. The
purpose
of this
thesis
was to
examine
if
gender
,
specifically
being
female
, was
related
to
volunteer
work
, and if the
values
motive
mediated
the
relationship
between
gender
and
volunteer
work
. A
survey
study
was
used
to
investigate
the
research
questions
, and
participants
were
recruited
using
the
psychology
participant
pool
at
Central
Connecticut
State
University
.
Participants
completed
survey
materials
online
via
SurveyMonkey.com
.
Baron
and
Kenny’s
(1986)
steps
for
assessing
mediation
were
used
to
test
the
hypothesized
relationships
.
Multiple
regression
analysis
showed
,
contrary
to
expectation
,
no
significant
relationship
between
gender
and
volunteer
work
. In
addition
,
no
significant
relationship
was
found
between
gender
and
values
motive
. The
fact
that
results
were not
consistent
with
previous
studies
maybe
due
to
(a)
a
change
in
time
constraints
of
women
, with
more
similarity
between
the
activities
of
men
and
women
(i.e.
,
career
,
higher
education
etc.)
,
therefore
making
available
time
for
volunteering
more
equivalent
between
the
genders
, or
(b)
the
fact
that the
operational
definition
of
volunteering
differed
from
previous
research
.
Thus
, the
hypothesized
relationship
between
gender
and
volunteer
work
and the
hypothesized
mediation
of that
relationship
by the
values
motive
were not
supported
in this
study
.
