Notes	The ways in which an individual views the self and others in the context of close relationships has been shown to influence how stress is both managed and coped with. However, questions remain about the mechanisms through which an individual’s early relationships influence how he/she experiences and manages distress. The present study explores individuals’ expectations of both the self and others, particularly in the context of distressing situations. Using self-report measures (N=197 college students), using a series of multiple regressions, methods focused on the association between four constructs (adult attachment characteristics, locus of control, self-concealment and anxiety sensitivity) and their relation to perceived social support. As expected, increased anxious and avoidant attachment orientation scores were found to be predictive of increased levels of SC, AS, and externality. These findings support the use of attachment orientations as a framework to examine how one manages and copes with distress. Increased AS was found to be predictive of increased SC, and increased SC in turn, was found to be predictive of decreased perceived social support. Implications for intervention development are discussed.
