Abstract
This
paper
is
an
analysis
of the
political
interaction
between
Jamaica
and the
United
States
,
1945-1988
.
It
will
seek
to
find
out
if there
is
a
correlation
between
Jamaica‘s
economic
development
,
underdevelopment
and
U.S
.
foreign
policy
toward
Jamaica
in
particular
. This
paper
will also
take
a
look
at
U.S
.
foreign
policy
towards
Jamaica
in
more
general
terms
. The
methodology
used
for this
thesis
consisted
of a
survey
of
literature
and
germane
data
covering
the
period
. The
literature
reviewed
consisted
of an
analysis
of
books
and
journal
articles
pertinent
to the
subject
matter
of the
thesis
.
Some
of the
sources
focused
on
theories
that
explained
U.S
.
foreign
policy
as
well
as the
historical
background
of
U.S
.
foreign
policy
in the
region
. The
sources
used
also
focused
on the
geostrategic
importance
of the
region
for the
United
States
, as
expressed
in the
Monroe
Doctrine
. The
sources
also
provided
a
historical
look
at
key
political
figures
in
Jamaica‘s
development
with
some
emphasis
on how those
political
figures
managed
the
society
. The
main
Jamaican
political
figure
focused
on in this
thesis
was
Michael
Manley
, a
political
figure
with
great
charisma
and a
good
orator
,
who
came
to
power
in
1972
,
during
a
period
in
which
there were
heightened
tensions
due
to the
Cold
War
. He
transformed
the
political
and
economic
aspect
of the
country
through
his
domestic
policy—Democratic
Socialism
,
which
focused
on
creating
a
better
path
for the
Jamaican
people
. His
policies
were
perceived
by US
policymakers
as not been in
tow
with
American
ideals
and for that
reason
destabilization
efforts
were
forged
by the
United
States
through
various
mechanisms
. The
ramification
of these
destabilization
efforts
are
still
present
in the
country
today
.
